Patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure are at risk for life-threatening complications during endotracheal intubation. Preoxygenation might help reduce the risk of hypoxemia and intubation-related complications. This network meta-analysis summarizes the efficacy and safety of preoxygenation methods in adult patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. ⋯ In adult patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, NIV is a safe and probably the most effective preoxygenation method.
