Multicenter Study Comparative StudyReducing the Number of Anesthetic Exposures in the Early Years of Life: Circumcision and Myringotomy as an Example.
Evidence suggests multiple anesthetics in early childhood may increase risk for neurodevelopmental injury. We evaluated proportions of children undergoing circumcision and myringotomy, concomitantly with or prior to circumcision, and compared costs between groups. The Pediatric Health Information System was queried for males aged 6 to 36 months who underwent circumcision in 2009-2014. ⋯ In total, 58.4% of patients who underwent circumcision and myringotomy did so concomitantly. Combined procedures resulted in significantly reduced costs and potentially minimized neurocognitive risk. Ideally, both referring pediatricians and surgical specialists should inquire about other surgical needs to optimize the availability of concomitant procedures.

Multicenter StudyScreen Exposure During Daily Routines and a Young Child's Risk for Having Social-Emotional Delay.
This cross-sectional study assessed associations between social-emotional development in young children and their number of daily routines involving an electronic screen. We hypothesized children with poor social-emotional development have a significant portion of daily routines occurring with a screen. ⋯ Median number of daily routines occurring with a screen for children at risk and not at risk for social-emotional delay (as defined by the ASQ: SE) was 7 versus 5. Children at risk for social-emotional delay were 5.8 times more likely to have ≥5 routines occurring with a screen as compared to children not at risk for delay (χ12 = 9.28, N = 210, P = .002; 95% confidence interval = 1.66-20.39).

Multicenter StudyHealth promotion in pediatric primary care: importance of health literacy and communication practices.
Health literacy has been shown to predict health behaviors and outcomes above the effects of education or socioeconomic status. Much remains unknown about the health literacy of parents and the role it plays in children's health outcomes or in health disparities. ⋯ When comparisons were made between 2 educational attainment groups, there were variations in indicators of health literacy and health communication needs. These data can be used to guide the development of interventions by primary care providers to improve parent education.

Multicenter StudyClinical features of a Dutch cohort of critically ill children due to the 2009 new influenza A H1N1 pandemic.
This study describes the clinical course, treatment, and outcome of 13 critically ill children due to infection with new influenza A H1N1, admitted to 2 pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in the northwestern part of the Netherlands. ⋯ In a Dutch cohort of 13 critically ill children due to infection with new influenza (H1N1), respiratory (100%) and circulatory (54%) failure characterized the course of this infection in most of these children. All children survived.
