Patients with cancer and their families comprise a significant population served by palliative care. Close collaboration between oncology clinicians and palliative care teams has demonstrated improved patient-centered care, especially when this care is integrated early in the course of the disease. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recently released their updated clinical practice guidelines for palliative care in oncology, which provide new opportunities for collaboration to expand the scope of care.

Guidelines are lacking for patients with calciphylaxis on renal replacement therapy, often leading to difficulty optimally treating these patients. A 60-year-old male veteran receiving hemodialysis presented with calciphylaxis of the left lower extremity and intractable pain. His condition was complicated by chronic back pain, long-term opioid therapy, and psychological trauma history. ⋯ Addressing complicated pain physiologies and complex trauma is challenging even in well-resourced tertiary medical centers. Despite the availability of calciphylaxis therapies and trauma-informed care, there remains a high rate of suffering and mortality in this patient population. There is much work to be done in this cohort, particularly when considering the implications of past traumatic experiences on health care engagement and pain management.

Background: Literature reviews reveal poor knowledge and awareness of palliative care in the public. Health literacy deficits impact access to palliative care. Objectives: The aim of this manuscript is to explore the public perception of palliative care in Germany. ⋯ The public's perception of palliative care is mainly medicine oriented, referring to inpatient care for the immediately dying; however, further significant misperceptions were scarce. Conclusions: The public perception shows an indistinct picture of palliative care, and some misconceptions about the objectives and areas of responsibility of the subject, meanwhile, palliative care is known to a majority of people. Understanding partly incomplete pictures of patients and relatives may help to react appropriately in staff-patient interactions and improve public relations.
