Three-dimensional (3D) printing of an acetabular wing-plate is a new minimally invasive surgical technique for complex acetabular fractures. ⋯ Customized 3D printing acetabular-wing plates provide stability for acetabular fractures compared to intraspecific buttressing fixation.

The clinical utility of remote ischemic preconditioning in protecting against cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury: A pilot randomized clinical trial.
Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) is a well-known, serious complication and a well-recognized independent risk factor for higher morbidity and mortality among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ In patients undergoing an off-pump coronary artery bypass, RIPC significantly reduces the occurrence of CSA-AKI and protects against increased postoperative NGAL levels.

The effect of desflurane and propofol protocols on preconditioning.
Preconditioning is one of the most powerful mechanisms preventing the myocardial ischemic damage that occurs during coronary artery bypass grafting. ⋯ On the basis of the measurement of h-FABP and TNF-α, low-dose propofol and continuous desflurane inhalation provide more effective preconditioning than propofol alone or a short course of desflurane in patients undergoing CABG.

Single Port vs. Four Port Cholecystectomy--Randomized Trial on Quality of Life.
Classical laparoscopic cholecystectomy involves four ports while most novel 'single port' technique only requires one incision on the abdominal wall. This technique is thought to decrease surgical trauma and improve cosmesis although there are reports pointing out that classical laparoscopic cholecystectomy is also feasible in terms of cosmesis. ⋯ The equal length of hospitalization, patient quality of life and pain perception and the longer operative times, high likelihood of incisional hernia and surgical site infection call into question the utilization of single port surgery, as it does not seem to confer an advantage over classical laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The effect of sevoflurane vs. TIVA on cerebral oxygen saturation during cardiopulmonary bypass--randomized trial.
Neuropsychological and neurological deficits are still major causes of mortality and morbidity after cardiac surgery. These complications are thought to be caused by embolisms and cerebral hypoxia. Thus, continuous neuromonitoring is essential during cardiac surgery due to cerebral oxygen desaturation during different periods. Near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS), a non-invasive method, appears to offer many advantages for monitoring cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics. Desaturation of cerebral oxygen may occur at the beginning of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) or during the low perfusion and rewarming stages if not corrected. ⋯ Oxygen saturation was higher in the sevoflurane group than in the TIVA group. Thus, the effect of sevoflurane was useful for maintaining cerebral oxygen saturation during CBP.
