Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections: Case Reports, from the Clinician's Perspectives.
Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI) are rapidly spreading and life-threatening infections of skin and soft tissue. Essentially there are two types of NSTI, based on the invasive microorganisms. The speed of development and associated clinical features differ markedly depending on the bacterial etiology. ⋯ In this chapter, we present three cases from the INFECT-study population. This study was an international, multicenter, prospective cohort study of adult patients with NSTI. We describe the clinical presentations, pre-, peri-, and postoperative clinical findings, microbiology, and treatment in cases of monobacillary Streptococcus pyogenes necrotizing soft tissue infections NSTI, polymicrobial infection, and an unusual presentation of pelvic monobacillary S. pyogenes infection in an immunocompromised patient.

Antibacterial Bioactive Glass, S53P4, for Chronic Bone Infections - A Multinational Study.
Osteomyelitis is an infectious process in bone that occasionally leads to bone destruction. Traditionally, the surgical treatment procedure is performed in combination with systemic and local antibiotics as a two-stage procedure that uses autograft or allograft bone for filling of the cavitary defect. Bioactive glass (BAG-S53P4) is a bone substitute with proven antibacterial and bone bonding properties. ⋯ The minimum follow-up was 1 year (12-95 months, median 31). The cure rate was 104/116, the total success rate 90 % and most of the patients showed a rapid recovery. The study shows that (BAG-S53P4) can be used in a one-stage procedure in treatment of osteomyelitis with excellent results.

Assessment of Air Pollution Effects on the Respiratory System Based on Pulmonary Function Tests Performed During Spirometry Days.
The Polish Spirometry Day is an initiative aimed at increasing awareness of the causes, symptoms, course, and effects that accompany respiratory diseases, especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In 2013, the second edition of the Spirometry Day was held. It gathered 180 medical centers and other institution. ⋯ There were differences in the prevalence of obstruction depending on the distance of the place of residence from a busy traffic road. A significant decrease of both spirometric variables was observed among people living in cities above 100,000 inhabitants within a distance lower than 50 m from roads. In general, better spirometry results were observed among inhabitants living more than 150 m from main roads.

Impaired cerebral autoregulation using near-infrared spectroscopy and its relation to clinical outcomes in premature infants.
The concordance between the change in the Mean Arterial Blood Pressure (MABP) and the Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) is studied using the Correlation, Coherence and Partial Coherence methods in order to detect Impaired Cerebral Autoregulation in Neonates. The presence of impaired autoregulation is assessed by the use of the Critical Percentage of Recording Time (CPRT). The changes in CBF are reflected by the measurement of changes in cerebral intravascular oxygenation (HbD), regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO(2)), and cerebral tissue oxygenation (TOI), as measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) (INVOS4100 and NIRO300). The relation between impaired autoregulation and long term clinical outcomes in premature infants is studied.
