The value of inflammatory markers in diagnosing acute appendicitis in pregnant patients.
Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common extra-obstetric condition requiring surgery during pregnancy. AA diagnosis is made by laboratory tests along with anamnesis and physical examination findings. Due to the physiological and anatomical changes during the pregnancy, AA diagnosis is more challenging in pregnant women compared to non-pregnant patients. The present study evaluated the significance of white blood cell counts (WBC), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) and lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) to diagnose acute appendicitis during pregnancy. ⋯ Considering WBC, NLR, CAR and LCR parameters in addition to medical history, physical examination and imaging techniques could help clinicians diagnose acute appendicitis in pregnant women.

Liver transplant versus non-liver transplant patients underwent appendectomy with presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis: Case-control study.
This study aims to compare liver transplant and non-liver transplant patients who underwent appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis. ⋯ WBC and neutrophil were lower in the LT group; however, the CRP and RDW were higher in the LT group. Further, perforation and negative appendectomy rates were higher in the LT group, although this difference was not statistically significant.

Guideline implementation and raising awareness for unintended perioperative hypothermia: Single-group 'before and after' study.
Unintended Perioperative Hypothermia (UPH) is defined as a core body temperature less than 36°C. The Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation [Türk Anesteziyoloji ve Reanimasyon Derneği (TARD)] published a 'Guideline for the Prevention of the Unintended Perioperative Hypothermia' in 2013. This study aims to decrease the incidence of unintended UPH in our hospital using a protocol, which is prepared according to the recommendations in the Guideline for the prevention of unintended perioperative hypothermia. ⋯ The incidence of unintended perioperative hypothermia can be significantly decreased with the evidence-based implementations.

The mid-term effects on quality of life and foot functions following pilon fracture.
Although pilon fractures are uncommon, they are of importance to orthopaedic surgeons because of the difficulty of treatment. Poor outcomes and high complication rates are seen despite various surgical methods. This study aims to examine the changes affecting the quality of life and foot functions in patients applied with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for a pilon fracture. ⋯ The reasons for the failure of ORIF in tibia pilon fractures were found to be Ruedi 3 classification, concomitant lateral malleolar fracture, and non-anatomic surgical reduction. Failure in foot functions has a direct effect on quality of life in both the short and mid term.

The role of C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio in the differentiation of acute and perforated appendicitis.
This study aimed to investigate the superiority of C-reactive protein (CRP) lymphocyte ratio (CLR) in acute appendicitis (AA) and perforated appendicitis (PA) compared to routine laboratory parameters in patients where radiological tests were insufficient to clarify the diagnosis. ⋯ This study provided that the CLR is an important parameter for the differentiation of AA and PA patients. Besides, it is a valuable predictor in the preoperative risk classification of these patients.
