Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a form of cancer developing from either the colon or rectum. Nowadays, research supports the functionality of exosome expressing microRNAs (miRNAs) as potential biomarker for various cancers including CRC. This study was performed with the intent of investigating the roles of both bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and exosomal miR-16-5p in CRC by regulating integrin α2 (ITGA2). ⋯ The in vitro experiments revealed that the BMSCs-derived exosomes overexpressing miR-16-5p inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion, while simultaneously stimulating the apoptosis of the CRC cells via downregulation of ITGA2. Furthermore, the results of in vivo experiments confirmed that the BMSCs-derived exosomes overexpressing miR-16-5p repressed the tumor growth of CRC. Collectively, BMSCs-derived exosomes overexpressing miR-16-5p restricted the progression of CRC by downregulating ITGA2.

Prognostic significance of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein in solid tumors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) is aberrantly expressed in solid tumors. Considering conflicting data, we conducted this meta-analysis to investigate its prognostic role. Electronic databases were searched to collect studies about associations between XIAP expressions and survival outcomes. ⋯ The results revealed that high XIAP expressions correlated with age (OR = 2.02; 95% CI, 1.07-3.84), lymph node metastasis (OR = 1.69; 95% CI, 1.02-2.77), histological grade (OR = 2.04; 95% CI, 1.01-4.11), and tumor stage (OR = 2.18; 95% CI, 1.20-3.96). The combined HR revealed that high XIAP expressions associated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.60; 95% CI, 1.22-2.10). Our study suggested high XIAP expressions may be indicative of poor prognosis in solid tumors.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies and is a serious threat to people's health worldwide. The prognosis of advanced HCC is dim if left untreated. ⋯ In recent years, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy have also made great progress, bringing new hope to patients with advanced HCC. In this study, therapeutic advances, current dilemma, and future directions of advanced HCC are reviewed, which might serve as a summary for clinicians and may stimulate future research.

Review
Molecular pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome based on gene expression.
Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) is a chronic bladder inflammation that leads to chronic bladder pain and urinary urgency and frequency. The presentation of IC/PBS is heterogeneous, and it is classified as ulcerative IC/PBS and nonulcerative IC/PBS. ⋯ In addition, there are no gold standards for the detection of this disorder to date. So, determination of gene expression and its role in different signaling pathways in the pathogenesis of this heterogeneous disorder contribute to the more efficient cognition of the pathophysiology of this disease and to the design of effective treatments and molecular diagnostic methods for IC/PBS.

Evidence has shown that several microRNAs (miRNAs) may be involved in coronary plaque rupture and local thrombus. However, the diagnostic ability of these miRNAs in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is less known. The aim of this study is to explore the diagnostic value of these circulating miRNAs in patients presenting with acute chest pain in the emergency department. ⋯ Circulating miR-19b, miR-223, and miR-483-5p may provide clinically useful information for diagnosis in the early phases of AMI.
