Case ReportsSuccessful treatment with recombinant thrombomodulin for B-cell lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation.
We report here a 47-year-old male with the diagnosis of high-grade B-cell lymphoma and hemophagocytosis accompanying disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (LAHS) is a life-threatening disorder, and LAHS secondary to B-cell lymphoma is relatively rare compared to that secondary to T- or NK/T-cell lymphoma in Western countries. ⋯ We successfully treated a patient with this condition with recombinant thrombomodulin (rTM), a novel agent for DIC. We believe that rTM is a therapeutic option in cases with B-cell LAHS accompanying DIC.

Review Case ReportsMetastasis of lung adenosquamous carcinoma to meningioma: case report with literature review.
The occurrence of metastasis of a systemic neoplasm to an intracranial tumor is a rare phenomenon. Meningiomas have been reported as the most common intracranial tumor to harbor a systemic metastasis, with breast and lung carcinomas being the most common sites of origination. Here, we report a case of an adenocarcinoma metastasis of an adenosquamous lung carcinoma found within a meningioma, resulting in the patient's first clinical manifestations. We also review the literature for other cases of adenocarcinoma metastatic to a meningioma and suggest mechanisms that make meningiomas likely to harbor systemic metastases including increased vascularity, slow growth rate, increased hyaline content and expression of cell-cell adhesion molecules.

Effects of glycyl-glutamine dipeptide supplementation on myocardial damage and cardiac function in rats after severe burn injury.
Glutamine decreases myocardial damage in ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, the cardioprotective effect of glutamine after burn injury remains unclear. Present study was to explore the protective effect of glycyl-glutamine dipeptide on myocardial damage in severe burn rats. ⋯ Compared with B group, the CK, LDH, AST and blood lactic acid levels reduced, myocardium ATP and GSH content increased in GG group. Moreover, the inhibition of cardiac contractile function and myocardial histopathological damage were reduced significantly in GG group. We conclude that myocardial histological structure and function were damaged significantly after burn injury, glycyl-glutamine dipeptide supplementation is beneficial to myocardial preservation by improving cardiocyte energy metabolism, increasing ATP and glutathione synthesis.

Association of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene G196A rs6265 polymorphisms and the cognitive function and clinical symptoms of schizophrenia.
This study aimed to explore the association between BDNF G196A gene rs6265 polymorphisms and the cognitive function and clinical symptoms of schizophrenia. ⋯ BDNF G196A gene rs6265 polymorphism is not associated with the cognitive function but with the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia.

Decreased SARI expression predicts poor prognosis of Chinese patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
SARI is associated with the risk for several cancers, and loss of SARI expression is frequently found in aggressive and metastatic cancer. Limited evidence shows that SARI is a tumor suppressor gene, but the role of SARI in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has not been previously reported. This study was to investigate the SARI expression profile in surgically resected lung cancer tissues of Chinese patients by immunohistochemistry and evaluate the relationship between SARI expression and prognosis of lung cancer patients. ⋯ In squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma patients, the SARI expression had no relation with the survival time; However in one-on-one analysis SARI expression in tumor cells and adjacent tissues, patients which tumor cells SARI express reduced than adjacent tissues, survival time was significantly shorter than those without reduction in SARI expression (Log Rank test, p = 0.001). After transfection by SARI gene, the proliferation and migration of A549 cells were obviously inhibited (p < 0.001). These results demonstrate that decreased SARI expression may predict a poor prognosis in NSCLC patients, and SARI may serve as a prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for lung cancer.
