Detection and identification of induction machine faults through the stator current signal using higher order spectra analysis is presented. This technique is known as motor current signature analysis (MCSA). This paper proposes two higher order spectra techniques, namely the power spectrum and the slices of bi-spectrum used for the analysis of induction machine stator current leading to the detection of electrical failures within the rotor cage. ⋯ Experimental signals have been analyzed highlighting that bi-spectrum results show their superiority in the accurate detection of rotor broken bars. Even when the induction machine is rotating at a low level of shaft load (no-load condition), the rotor fault detection is efficient. We will also demonstrate through the analysis and experimental verification, that our proposed proposed-method has better detection performance in terms of receiver operation characteristics (ROC) curves and precision-recall graph.

This paper proposes an adaptive second order sliding mode (SOSM) controller with a nonlinear sliding surface. The nonlinear sliding surface consists of a gain matrix having a variable damping ratio. Initially the sliding surface uses a low value of damping ratio to get a quick system response. ⋯ The actual control input obtained by integrating the derivative control signal is smooth and chattering free. The adaptive tuning law used by the proposed controller eliminates the need of prior knowledge about the upper bound of system uncertainties. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Variance sensitive adaptive threshold-based PCA method for fault detection with experimental application.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a statistical process monitoring technique that has been widely used in industrial applications. PCA methods for Fault Detection (FD) use data collected from a steady-state process to monitor T(2) and Q statistics with a fixed threshold. For the systems where transient values of the processes must be taken into account, the usage of a fixed threshold in PCA method causes false alarms and missing data that significantly compromise the reliability of the monitoring systems. ⋯ The proposed method is implemented and validated experimentally on an electromechanical system. The method is compared with the conventional monitoring methods. Experimental tests and tabulated results confirm the fact that the proposed method is applicable and effective for both the steady-state and transient operations and gives early warning to operators.

The objective of this paper is to propose a new method for the detection of inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings of induction motors. In the previous reported methods, the supply voltage unbalance was the major difficulty, and this was solved mostly based on the sequence component impedance or current which are difficult to implement. Some other methods essentially are included in the offline methods. ⋯ Although the magnitude of these harmonics depends on the level of unbalanced voltage, they have the same magnitude in three phases in these conditions. Experiments performed under various load, fault, and supply voltage conditions validate the simulation results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique. It is shown that the detection of resistive slight short circuits, without sensitivity to supply voltage unbalance is possible.

An improved auto-tuning scheme is proposed for Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuned PID controllers (ZNPIDs), which usually provide excessively large overshoots, not tolerable in most of the situations, for high-order and nonlinear processes. To overcome this limitation ZNPIDs are upgraded by some easily interpretable heuristic rules through an online gain modifying factor defined on the instantaneous process states. This study is an extension of our earlier work [Mudi RK., Dey C. ⋯ Stability issues are addressed for linear processes. Robust performance of AZNPID is observed while changing its tunable parameters as well as the process dead-time. The proposed scheme is also implemented on a real time servo-based position control system.
