An improved auto-tuning scheme is proposed for Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuned PID controllers (ZNPIDs), which usually provide excessively large overshoots, not tolerable in most of the situations, for high-order and nonlinear processes. To overcome this limitation ZNPIDs are upgraded by some easily interpretable heuristic rules through an online gain modifying factor defined on the instantaneous process states. This study is an extension of our earlier work [Mudi RK., Dey C. ⋯ Stability issues are addressed for linear processes. Robust performance of AZNPID is observed while changing its tunable parameters as well as the process dead-time. The proposed scheme is also implemented on a real time servo-based position control system.

This study reports on hearing loss due to the combined effects of noise and sodium salicylate. A group of 10 adult chinchillas was used to test the hypothesis that the combined effects of prolonged exposure to noise and continuous salicylate intoxication will result in a larger Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS) in the audibility curve than either of the agents alone can produce. Extensive behavioral training was used to determine hearing thresholds. ⋯ Serum salicylate levels of 20-40 mg per 100 ml resulted in a TTS of 30 dB on the average. The combination of noise and sodium salicylate exposure produced a temporary hearing loss of approximately 55 dB. These data suggested that the combination of prolonged noise and salicylate exposure may result in a larger hearing loss than either agent alone can produce.

The filter term of a PID with Filter controller reduces the impact of measurement noise on the derivative action of the controller. This impact is quantified by the controller output travel defined as the total movement of the controller output per unit time. Decreasing controller output travel is important to reduce wear in the final control element. ⋯ In contrast, the novel IMC correlations presented in this paper calculate a filter time constant based upon the model of the process and the user's choice for the closed-loop time constant. The set point tracking and disturbance rejection performance of the proposed IMC tunings is demonstrated using simulation studies and a bench-scale experimental system. The proposed IMC tunings are shown to perform as well as various PID correlations (with and without a filter term) while requiring considerably less controller action.

This paper proposes an adaptive second order sliding mode (SOSM) controller with a nonlinear sliding surface. The nonlinear sliding surface consists of a gain matrix having a variable damping ratio. Initially the sliding surface uses a low value of damping ratio to get a quick system response. ⋯ The actual control input obtained by integrating the derivative control signal is smooth and chattering free. The adaptive tuning law used by the proposed controller eliminates the need of prior knowledge about the upper bound of system uncertainties. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

The objective of this paper is to propose a new method for the detection of inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings of induction motors. In the previous reported methods, the supply voltage unbalance was the major difficulty, and this was solved mostly based on the sequence component impedance or current which are difficult to implement. Some other methods essentially are included in the offline methods. ⋯ Although the magnitude of these harmonics depends on the level of unbalanced voltage, they have the same magnitude in three phases in these conditions. Experiments performed under various load, fault, and supply voltage conditions validate the simulation results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique. It is shown that the detection of resistive slight short circuits, without sensitivity to supply voltage unbalance is possible.
