Spinal arteriovenous malformation associated with Parkes Weber syndrome: Report of two cases and literature review.
To present 2 cases of Parkes Weber syndrome (PWS) with spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and discuss the radiologic features and clinical treatment with literature review. ⋯ Awareness of the association between spinal AVM and PWS is essential for radiographic screening of spinal lesions with myelopathy or intracranial subarachnoid hemorrhage. Clinical therapeutic strategy should be multidisciplinary and individualized on the basis of vasculature and lesion behavior.

Congenital Malformations of the Central Nervous System in Rural Western Honduras: A 6-Year Report on Trends.
Central nervous system (CNS) malformations, including neural tube defects (NTDs), are the second most common type of birth defects worldwide and are major causes of childhood disability and mortality. We report the first analysis of birth prevalence in Western Honduras of CNS malformations including NTDs over 6 consecutive years. ⋯ This is the first study reporting disease burden of CNS malformations in Western Honduras. The nationwide birth prevalence of NTDs in rural Honduras may have decreased since the implementation of prenatal health policies in 2005. However, we identified regions with unexpectedly elevated prevalence, indicating high regional prevalence that could be targeted for improved preventive efforts, ultimately decreasing the burden of these conditions.

Congenital or early-onset brain structural lesions often cause contralateral hemiparesis, cognitive deficits, developmental delays, and seizures. Seizure is the most debilitating condition, as it greatly impairs quality of life in both the affected individuals and their caregivers and prevents them from active social participation. ⋯ This technique is simple because no patient participation is required. We believe that it has the potential to replace conventional preoperative functional magnetic resonance imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation in resective epilepsy surgery, particularly for young patients. Not only can it improve the safety of surgical procedures, but also it can help predict functional outcome.

To investigate the biomechanical properties of a novel stabilization method for posterior cervical motion preservation using bioderived freeze-dried tendon. ⋯ Bilateral facet joint stabilization can significantly limit excessive flexion motion and maintain adequate stability. Furthermore, the preservation of extension motions without limiting lateral bending and rotation ideally simulates the features of the posterior ligamentous complex. This preserves the dynamic stability of the lower cervical spine.

Opinions vary regarding optimal treatment of unstable hangman's fractures, including rigid orthosis and internal fixation. The anatomy of upper cervical spine is complex. The advent of intraoperative 3-dimensional navigation systems facilitates safe and accurate instrumentation. ⋯ Intraoperative O-arm-based navigation is a safe, accurate, and effective tool for screw placement in patients with unstable hangman fracture and achieves good anatomical reduction.
