Traumatic brain injury (TBI) constitutes a critical public health and socioeconomic problem. As one of the leading causes of mortality and disability from road traffic crashes, the incidence of TBIs is increasing with increasing motor vehicle usage. Understanding the prevalence and describing the characteristics of TBI are crucial for successful implementation of prevention and treatment efforts to reduce the mortality and morbidity caused by TBIs. ⋯ This preliminary analysis highlights the need to address road safety, especially with respect to helmet use and drink driving, to reduce the burden of TBIs in Bandung.

To define the maxillary artery (MaxA) anatomy and present a novel technique for exposing and preparing this vessel as a bypass donor. ⋯ The MaxA can be exposed without zygomatic osteotomies or resection of the middle fossa floor. Anatomic landmarks for exposing the MaxA include the anterior and posterior deep temporal arteries and the pterygomaxillary fissure.

To investigate the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) and the risk factors for postoperative infections in clean neurosurgery. ⋯ Our results show that in our data set, AP had no preventive effect on postoperative infections in clean neurosurgery. In addition, AP appeared to decrease the positive bacterial culture rate and to promote the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Cerebrospinal fluid leakage and surgery time were the risk factors for postoperative infection.

This study examined the relationship between neuron density in the stellate ganglion and the severity of basilar artery (BA) enlargement after bilateral common carotid artery ligation. ⋯ High neuron density in stellate ganglia may protect against steno-occlusive carotid artery disease by preventing BA dilatation and aneurysm formation in the posterior circulatory arteries.

The aim of this study was to determine whether hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy causes attenuation of traumatic brain injury (TBI)-induced depression-like behavior and its associated anti-neuroinflammatory effects after fluid percussion injury. ⋯ Our results suggest that HBO treatment may ameliorate TBI-induced depression-like behavior in rats by attenuating neuroinflammation, representing one possible mechanism by which depression-like behavior recovery might occur. We also recommend HBO as a potential treatment for TBI-induced depression-like behavior if early intervention is possible.
