The management of high-grade glioma (HGG) has been affected by recent landmark trials and is now more proactive. More aggressive treatment leads to hospitalization due to side effects, however. Space-occupying tumor bed cysts have been described, but not systematically assessed. We sought to analyze this complication in a contemporary HGG cohort. ⋯ In modern neuro-oncology, the rate of tumor bed cysts complicating HGG management appears stable compared with historical data. Shunt implantation is feasible and effective. We propose a classification system as a common data element for comparison across future studies.

To evaluate the clinical and angiographic outcomes of intracranial aneurysm treatment using a single Pipeline embolization device (PED), and to evaluate the factors affecting aneurysm obliteration rate. ⋯ Our data suggest that a single PED is sufficient to induce complete or near-complete obliteration of most aneurysms. The presence of a branching artery arising from the aneurysm neck is highly predictive of incomplete occlusion after treatment with a single PED.

Patients with single brain metastasis (SBM) have better outcomes after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). We analyzed our SRS database to evaluate possible prognostic factors in patients with SBM. ⋯ This is the largest series of patients with SBM treated with SRS analyzed for OS, LPFS, and DPFS. SPI was devised for end points. Tumor volume had a significant association with all 3 end points. Neurologic symptoms, age, and previous whole-brain radiotherapy were also found to be prognostic.

Lateral approaches to the spine are increasing in popularity. However, details of the innervation pattern of the abdominal oblique muscles with the initial dissection have not been well studied. ⋯ Knowledge of the innervation and nerve dominance patterns might help decrease postoperative complications such as sensory deficits or abdominal wall hernias. The subcostal nerve is the dominant nerve in both size and innervation of the oblique muscles in the lateral position, transpsoas approach.

The proportion of women among neurosurgeons appears to be growing worldwide with time. Official data concerning the current situation across Europe have not yet been published. Thus, there are still concerns about gender inequality. The European Women in Neurosurgery Project 2016 was designed to recognize the current situation across Europe. ⋯ Neurosurgery is a challenging field of medicine. The results of our survey did not imply an overall feeling of gender inequality among European respondents, although women believe that the gender issue to be more important than men do and that they have to sacrifice more of their personal lives.
