Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy versus posterior open lumbar microdiscectomy for the treatment of symptomatic lumbar disc herniation: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the clinical efficacy between percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) versus posterior open lumbar microdiscectomy (OLMD) for the treatment of symptomatic lumbar disc herniation. ⋯ Based on the present meta-analysis, no significant difference existed in VAS and ODI scores between the 2 surgical procedures, and they were also similar in terms of operation time, complication rate, and incidence of recurrence and reoperation, but PELD showed shorter hospital stay and time of return to work. Thus, under the premise of careful manipulation and complete decompression, we consider that PELD is a relatively more minimally invasive technique, which could be an alternative to OLMD.

Biopsy Versus Subtotal Versus Gross Total Resection in Patients with Low-Grade Glioma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The role of the extent of surgical resection (EOR) in clinical outcomes for patients with low-grade glioma requires further examination. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the association between variable degrees of EOR and clinical outcomes for patients with low-grade glioma. ⋯ Among patients with low-grade gliomas, greater degrees of safe EOR were associated with longer OS and progression-free survival, better seizure control, and delayed malignant transformation, without increasing mortality or morbidity.

Dominique Jean Larrey (1766-1842) and his Contributions to Military Medicine and Early Neurosurgery.
Dr. Dominique Jean Larrey was a pioneer in the field of military surgery. ⋯ Larrey has often been referred to as "the father of emergency medical services" and "the father of modern military medicine." His contributions to medicine continue to live on in common procedures and healthcare systems today, such as aspiration of pericardial effusion and drainage of hemothorax and empyema. Based on his own writings, he treated multiple cases of intracranial injury, making him an early, but often forgotten, pioneer of neurosurgery.

An early description of using oral route for the management of cervical vertebra fracture by Ibn al-Quff in the 13th Century.
This study presents information regarding the treatment of fractures and dislocations of the vertebrae, including the use of the oral route for upper cervical fractures, presented in certain chapters of the book titled Kitāb al-'Umda fī Ṣinā'a al-Jirāḥa (Ibn al-Quff, thirteenth century ad). ⋯ The use of the oral route introduced by Ibn al-Quff may be one of the earliest examples of novel, practical, and advanced treatment for cervical vertebral fracture.

Large intraosseous lipoma of the skull:A case report and review of the literature.
Intraosseous lipomas occurring within the skull are rare. Currently, the known locations include the frontal bone, parietal bone, temporal bone, and ethmoid bone. Thus far, we have found only 12 cases of lipoma at the top of the forehead on the skull, and only 2 cases of recurrent intraosseous lipoma have been reported. The patient with intraosseous lipoma we have described was a 3-year-old boy, the youngest of the 12 known patients with intraosseous lipoma of the skull, and the patient had repeated relapses. ⋯ For large intraosseous lipomas occurring in the skull, owing to its special position and the tendency for repeated relapses to develop, extending the excision is an effective surgical approach. For swelling involving a wide range, surgery should involve specialists in craniofacial surgery.
