Optimizing Radiosurgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia: Impact of Radiation Dose and Anatomic Target on Patient Outcomes.
Radiosurgery is an increasingly popular treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN); however, several treatment variables require further study. This meta-analysis was conducted to clarify ambiguity in the literature and optimize treatment parameters. ⋯ Higher radiation dose was associated with superior pain control without increasing bothersome numbness. Independent of dose, the distal target was also associated with improved pain control. Bothersome numbness was not related to dose or target.

Burnout among neurosurgeons and residents in neurosurgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature.
Burnout syndrome (BS) is a common condition among medical professionals. It is composed of 3 different subdimensions: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). In the last years, interest in BS in the neurosurgical community has increased. Here we investigated burnout among neurosurgeons and residents in neurosurgery. ⋯ Neurosurgery is a rewarding career choice, but numerous challenges and stressors can lead to lower levels of satisfaction and dangerously increased levels of burnout. We hope that our results will generate discussion, raise awareness, stimulate further studies, and lead to programs designed to mitigate excessive stress and burnout in neurosurgeons.

Outcome of microsurgical clipping for multiple vs single intracranial aneurysms: A single institutional retrospective comparative cohort study.
To evaluate the results of microsurgical clipping for single intracranial aneurysm (SIA) and multiple intracranial aneurysms (MIA) and compare the outcomes. ⋯ Comparable clinical outcomes and high rates of complete aneurysm occlusion following microsurgical clipping can be expected in patients with SIA and patients with MIA.

Pedicle screw placement is the most common method of fixation in the thoracic spine. Use of the "superior facet rule" allows the operator to locate the borders of the pedicle reliably using posterior landmarks alone. This study investigated the ability of 3-dimensionally (3D)-printed thoracic vertebrae, made from combined thermoplastic polymers, to demonstrate pedicle screw cannulation accurately using the superior facet as a reliable landmark. ⋯ 3D-printed thoracic vertebral models using combined thermoplastic polymers can accurately demonstrate the anatomical ultrastructure and posterior element relationships of the superior facet rule for safe thoracic pedicle screw placement. This method of vertebral model prototyping could prove useful for surgical education and demonstrating spinal anatomy.
