Spinal schwannomas are benign nerve sheath neoplasms that constitute about 30% of extramedullary spinal cord tumors. They are usually small, well-encapsulated tumors with low mitotic activity and concurrently carry a low risk of recurrence. Here, we report a case of atypical histologic variant of spinal schwannoma that had higher cellular density, nuclear atypia, and lack of encapsulation. To our best knowledge, no such cases of this atypical variant with regards to lumbar spine have been reported in the literature. ⋯ Atypical schwannoma has higher cellular density and nuclear atypia and lacks encapsulation. A review of the literature suggests an increased risk of recurrence when compared with typical variants, and complete tumor removal should be attempted.

Microsurgery "Under the Eaves" using ORBEYE: A Case of dAVF of the Anterior Cranial Fossa.
One of the merits of exoscopes, including ORBEYE, is that they are superior to a microscope in terms of ergonomic features. We report a case of dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) that was cured by direct surgery using the ergonomic advantages of ORBEYE. ⋯ ORBEYE facilitates ergonomic microsurgery, even under the eaves, with the angle of the operative visual axis approximately horizontal using gravity.

Despite common gender disparities in authorship across the vast majority of specialties, the presence of a similar lack of equality in neurosurgery literature is not published yet. Therefore the authors examined the changes in representation of women among the first and senior (last) authors of original articles in high-impact neurosurgical journals between 2003 and 2018. ⋯ Although a rising trend in female authorship of neurosurgical literature has been going on through the last 2 decades, this advancement could not be regarded as satisfactory, as the gender gap in authorship is still excessive. Strikingly, female first authors had a tendency of coauthoring with female senior authors.

Pituitary adenomas are mostly benign in character and are managed via a transsphenoidal approach in most cases. Crooke's cell adenoma (CCA) is a particular variant accounting for less than 1% of the pituitary adenomas. They have a distinctive histopathologic pattern and behavior. ⋯ CCA is recognized by its local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates. They tend to be locally invasive; however, posterior fossa invasion has not been reported to date. We aim to contribute to the arsenal of differential diagnosis of similar pituitary tumor cases.

In 2014, the Young Neurosurgeons Committee under the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) began allowing medical schools to create AANS Medical Student Chapters. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of these chapters on participation in organized neurosurgery, research productivity, and residency match success. ⋯ Since their inception, AANS Medical Student Chapters have demonstrated substantial research productivity and involvement in organized neurosurgery. Furthermore, there is an association between higher chapter activity, manifested by publications and annual meeting attendance, and increased residency match success.
