Familial forms of cavernous malformations (CMs) often occur as multiple lesions. Nevertheless, the presence of a single CM does not exclude the familiarity. The aim of this study is to establish which patients who undergo surgery for a single cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM), with no family history at initial diagnosis, should be investigated for familiarity through genetic testing and counseling. ⋯ Patients with CCM and no known family history at the time of the initial diagnosis who present specific features should be studied by genetic screening. The Ki67 MIB1 is a useful biomarker in favor of familial occurrence and may be studied in all patients with CMs to define the indication to the genetic tests.

To evaluate seizure outcome in patients with seizure-associated dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). ⋯ DAVF-related seizures can be effectively controlled through treatment of DAVF. Short seizure history and fewer seizures before treatment predict satisfactory seizure outcome after DAVF treatment, which indicates early treatment for seizure-associated DAVFs.

Ogilvie syndrome (OS) is a rare but serious condition seen in the postoperative period. This was an epidemiologic study using data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2005 to 2014 to look at incidence, risk factors, and outcomes associated with OS after primary spine fusion. ⋯ OS is a rare but serious complication of primary spine fusion surgery. Identifying the specific risk factors, symptoms, and potential complications related to OS is critical to aid in decreasing the significant morbidity associated with its development.

The blood supply to the skull base is important to surgeons and those performing interventional and diagnostic procedures in this region. However, 1 vessel with a vast distribution in this area, the dorsal meningeal artery (DMA), has had few anatomic studies performed to investigate not only its normal anatomy but also its variations. Therefore the current study aimed to analyze the DMA via cadaveric dissection. ⋯ Surgeons operating at the skull base or clinicians interpreting imaging of this area should have a good working knowledge of the DMA and its typical and variant anatomy.

Resection of pure intraorbital tumors is challenging owing to the nearness of the optic apparatus. The objective of this article was to report our experience with different intraorbital tumors and discuss classic approaches and obstacles. ⋯ Considering the low operative morbidity and satisfactory functional outcome, gross total resection of intraorbital lesions is feasible. We support use of classic transcranial and transorbital approaches. More invasive and complicated approaches were not needed in our series.
