Although pedicle screw sizes may affect the rate of bone union after lumbar fusion surgery, there is currently no supportive clinical evidence. ⋯ The selection of an appropriately sized screw is important for achieving rigid fusion after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. Preoperative planning using multiplanar reconstruction computed tomography is an important approach for ensuring good clinical results.

Surgical treatment of brainstem cavernoma is controversial.1 With modern surgical technique, safe and complete removal of selected brainstem cavernoma is possible.2 The choice of optimal corridor must consider various factors, including eloquent structures of the brainstem, cavernoma shape and location, as well as the presence of an exophytic portion to the lesion.3,4 The endoscopic endonasal approach, with its refinement through the last decade, could offer an optimal corridor for the removal of ventral brainstem cavernomas. This video exemplifies the key surgical steps, advantages of the technique, and relevant anatomy for the endoscopic endonasal removal of a ventrally exophytic pontine cavernoma.

Neural tube defects are among the most frequent congenital abnormalities of the central nervous system. Progression of neural tube deficits is affected by hereditary predilection and environmental determinants. Pethidine (meperidine) is a fast and powerful opioid analgesic in U.S. Food and Drug Administration category C. There are reports about developmental anomalies due to this medication. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different doses of pethidine hydrochloride on neural tube development in a chick embryo model resembling the first month of vertebral growth in mammals. ⋯ We demonstrated that pethidine hydrochloride affects neuronal development in chicken embryos. The teratogenic mechanism of pethidine hydrochloride is unclear; therefore, further investigation is required.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are 2 important factors in the emergence of paraplegia associated with spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury (SCIRI) after thoracoabdominal aortic surgery. Here it is aimed to investigate the effects of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide (GLPS) on SCIRI. ⋯ These outcomes propose that pretreatment with GLPS prevents progression of SCIRI by alleviating inflammation, oxidation, and apoptosis.
