To study the 24-hour expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in synaptic and extrasynaptic neurons expressing N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), and normal neuronal cultures, via microarray analysis. ⋯ Differential expression of lncRNAs after synaptic and extrasynaptic NMDAR activation suggests that lncRNAs may be responsible for extrasynaptic NMDAR-induced neurodegeneration.

Thoracolumbar Injury Classification System (TLICS) score and Thoracolumbar AO Spine Injury Score (TLAOSIS) are the scores preferred to classify and treat thoracolumbar fractures. Our study evaluates the reliability of both as guidelines for treatment. ⋯ Both scales have a good concordance in general, with TLICS being more conservative overall. They had rather low coincidence when predicting surgery. Because TLAOSIS placed more patients in the gray zone, we think it might be slightly better for giving surgeons more license to decide a surgical approach on certain controversial types of fractures.

In this study, we investigated if and when dural tenting sutures are necessary during craniotomy. ⋯ Placing dural tenting sutures is an important technique for ensuring hemostasis. However, when not needed, they seem to cause inadvertent complications. As our results suggest, knowing when and where to use them is equally important.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease that accounts for nearly three fourths of dementia cases. Searching for potential biomarkers will help clinicians in the early diagnosis and treatment of AD. ⋯ Eleven hub miRNAs were identified, and DEmRNAs was found to be significantly enriched in the N-glycan biosynthesis pathway, which contributes to the early diagnosis and treatment of AD.

Ischemic stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Smoking accelerates the onset of stroke by 10 years. The effects of smoking status on percent change in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, infarct volume, and edema volume were examined following mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion in patients with acute ischemic stroke. ⋯ These findings are valuable for patient counseling, particularly for women, for smoking cessation.
