Artificial intelligence (AI) has facilitated the analysis of medical imaging given increased computational capacity and medical data availability in recent years. Although many applications for AI in the imaging of brain tumors have been proposed, their potential clinical impact remains to be explored. A systematic review was performed to examine the role of AI in the analysis of pediatric brain tumor imaging. ⋯ AI methods for analysis of pediatric brain tumor imaging have increased exponentially in recent years. However, adoption of these methods in clinical practice requires further characterization of validity and utility. Implementation of these methods may streamline clinical workflows by improving diagnostic accuracy and automating basic imaging analysis tasks.

Natural history of brainstem cavernous malformations: on the variation in hemorrhage rates.
Hemorrhage rates of conservatively managed brainstem cavernous malformations (BSCMs) vary widely in the literature. We aimed to elucidate the reason for the variation and to add the results of our experience of BSCMs management over the past decade. ⋯ The reported hemorrhage rates are calculated in 2 different ways. In our patient cohort, both the retrospective and prospective hemorrhage rates were in accordance with those in the literature. The long-term hemorrhage rate lies between the prospective and retrospective rate.

Costs Associated with Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy are Lower than Anterior Temporal Lobectomy for the Treatment of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.
Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive alternative to anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) for treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy. It has gained popularity as familiarity with technique increases and outcomes are better characterized. There has been no direct cost comparison between the 2 techniques in literature to date. The current study directly compares hospital costs associated with LITT with those of ATL patients and analyzes the factors potentially responsible for those costs. ⋯ Given the minimally invasive nature of LITT, it is associated with shorter length of stay and lower hospital costs than ATL in the first head-to-head comparison of procedural costs in literature to date. Long-term efficacy as it relates to these costs associated with LITT and ATL should be further investigated to better characterize the utility of LITT in temporal lobe epilepsy patients.

This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of third ventricular floor bowing (TVFB) as a marker for surgical success in patients undergoing endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). ⋯ This meta-analysis showed that the presence of TVFB was associated with increased ETV success.

Predictors of Mortality, Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Measures, and Discharge Disposition in Octogenarians with Subdural Hematomas.
Risk factors for mortality in patients with subdural hematoma (SDH) include poor Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, pupil nonreactivity, and hemodynamic instability on presentation. Little is published regarding prognosticators of SDH in the elderly. This study aims to examine risk factors for hospital mortality and withdrawal of life-sustaining measures in an octogenarian population presenting with SDH. ⋯ Poor GCS, pupil nonreactivity, ISS, and intraventricular hemorrhage are independently associated with hospital mortality or discharge to hospice care in patients >80 years with SDH. Pre-existing CHF may further predict withdrawal of life-sustaining measures.
