In Africa, epilepsy is a real burden. Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common drug-resistant focal epilepsy disorder, and temporal lobectomy is the most common effective treatment for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. ⋯ These results confirm that most patients with drug-resistant epilepsy may benefit from surgical treatment without submitting to preoperative invasive explorations. This finding should help develop epilepsy surgery widely in Africa.

Gender inequalities persist in several areas of medicine, despite the growing number of female doctors and medical students. In this study, we aimed to reveal the gender inequality in the top journals' editorial boards and national societies' leadership positions in the field of neurology and neurosurgery. ⋯ In conclusion, there is a significant gender inequality among editorial board members. The position of neurosurgical societies and journals is far different than the field of neurology. Furthermore, these findings should be evaluated as a continuum of the gender inequality in the professional societies' executive boards and delegates representing the national academical community.

Lateral-access spine surgery has many benefits, but adoption has been limited by a steep learning curve. Virtual reality (VR) is gaining popularity and lends itself as a useful tool in enhancing neurosurgical resident education. We thus sought to assess whether VR-based simulation could enhance the training of neurosurgery residents in lateral spine surgery. ⋯ VR-based simulation enhanced neurosurgical residents' ability to understand lateral access surgery. Immersive surgical simulation resulted in improved resident confidence with surgical technique and workflow, perceived improvement in anatomical knowledge, and simulation performance scores. Trainee perceptions on virtual simulation and training as a curriculum supplement also improved following completion of VR training.

Aneurysm treatment with the Pipeline Vantage Embolization Device in Retrospective Evaluation: Periprocedural results from the Pipe-VADER study.
The Pipeline Vantage Embolization Device is a fourth-generation flow diverter with an antithrombotic coating and a reduced profile compared to previous Pipeline versions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the procedural feasibility, safety, and efficacy of this device. ⋯ The new Pipeline Vantage appears to be safe and feasible for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms and warrants further evaluation.

Three-dimensional (3D) printed models are used in the medical field. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a 3D-printed guide plate for use in brain biopsy. ⋯ The 3D-printed guide plate was noninvasive and had acceptable accuracy and the flexibility of frameless systems. The economic and operative benefits of this device supported its status as a powerful tool for brain biopsy in medical facilities in economically disadvantaged areas or institutions without navigation systems.
