Medical knowledge during the medieval ages flourished under the influence of great scholars of the Islamic Golden age such as Ibn Sina (Latinized as Avicenna), Abu Bakr al-Razi (Rhazes), and Abu al-Qasim Khalaf ibn al-Abbas al-Zahrawi, known as Albucasis. Much has been written on al-Zahrawi's innovation in various disciplines of medicine and surgery. In this article, we focus for on the contributions of al-Zahrawi toward the treatment of neurological disorders in the surgical chapters of his medical encyclopedia, Kitab al-Tasrif (The Method of Medicine). ⋯ Al-Zahrawi was a renowned physician during the Islamic Golden age who made significant contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions, particularly cranial and spinal cord injuries. He developed innovative surgical techniques for trephination and spinal traction, which are still used in modern neurosurgery. His insights make him worthy of recognition as an important figure in the history of neurological surgery.

Though currently considered a 'black box,' machine learning (ML) has a promising future to ameliorate the health-care burden of stroke which is the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. Through this study, we sought to review the most influential articles on the applications of ML in stroke. ⋯ Recent years have witnessed a surge in the application of ML in stroke, with an enhancement in interest and funding over the years. ML has revolutionized the management of stroke and continues to aid in the neurosurgical decision-making and care in stroke patients.

The 100 Most Cited Articles on Functional Neurosurgery in Latin America: A Scientometric Analysis.
Significant progress has been made in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (SFN) within Latin America (LATAM), which can be attributed to the rapid advancements in technology and a growing pool of expertise. However, despite the growing importance of this field, a comprehensive scientometric analysis of LATAM contributions is still lacking. The aim of this study is to shed light on the top-cited articles in the field authored by LATAM researchers. ⋯ Epilepsia emerged as the journal with the highest number of articles. Mexico and Brazil contributed the most articles, with the University of São Paulo and the Hospital General de Mexico being the most productive institutions. This scientometric analysis highlights the impactful research contributions from the region, identifies influential authors and institutions, and emphasizes the necessity for additional collaboration and exploration.

With no cure for Alzheimer disease (AD), current efforts involve therapeutics that prevent further cognitive impairment. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been studied for its potential to mitigate AD symptoms. This systematic review investigates the efficacy of current and previous targets for their ability to slow cognitive decline in treating AD. ⋯ This review summarizes current evidence and addresses variability in study designs regarding the therapeutic benefit of DBS of the fornix, NBM, and VS. Because of varying study parameters, varying outcome measures, varying study durations, and limited cohort sizes, definitive conclusions regarding the utility of DBS for AD cannot be made. Further investigation is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of DBS for AD.

Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Aneurysm Shaped Like a "Calabash Gourd" and Mimicking a Tumor.
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery aneurysms are likely to be fusiform, yet they hardly enlarge to mimic a tumor in the posterior fossa on radiology. They constitute about 3%-4% of all cerebral aneurysms. ⋯ The lesion was resected via surgery, and histopathology established the diagnosis of an aneurysm. Her tremor and dizziness subsided 3 months after the surgery, and at her 2-year follow-up she was well with no further neurologic deficits.
