Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes for death in both developed and developing countries and it is the single largest cause of death in the United States, responsible for 1 out of every 6 deaths. The objective of this study was to determine microRNA (miRNA) expression in AMI and determine whether miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b could be measured in plasma as a biomarker for recurrence. ⋯ The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/8183629061241474.

Comparative Study Observational Study
Inter-observer variability between general pathologists and a specialist in breast pathology in the diagnosis of lobular neoplasia, columnar cell lesions, atypical ductal hyperplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast.
This study aimed to assess inter-observer variability between the original diagnostic reports and later review by a specialist in breast pathology considering lobular neoplasias (LN), columnar cell lesions (CCL), atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast. ⋯ The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1640072350119725.

Red blood cell distribution width is not correlated with preeclampsia among pregnant Sudanese women.
Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide. The exact etiology of preeclampsia is unknown, but the inflammatory process is postulated as one of the etiologies. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of anisocytosis (variation of red cell size) and is associated with hypertension and diabetic ketoacidosis. There are few data on the association between RDW and preeclampsia. This study aimed to investigate the association between RDW and preeclampsia. ⋯ The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1206247718115175.

Validation of digital whole slide images is crucial to ensure that diagnostic performance is at least equivalent to that of glass slides and light microscopy. The College of American Pathologists Pathology and Laboratory Quality Center recently developed recommendations for internal digital pathology system validation. Following these guidelines we sought to validate the performance of a digital approach for routine diagnosis by using an iPad and digital control widescreen-assisted workstation through a pilot study. ⋯ We validated our institutional digital pathology system for routine diagnostic facing with whole slide images in a cockpit enterprise digital system or iPad tablet. Computer widescreens are better for diagnosing scanned glass slide that iPad. For urgent requests, iPad may be used. Legal aspects have to be soon faced with to permit the clinical use of this technology in a manner that does not compromise patient care.

Preventive and therapeutic options for renal failure are still limited. Gene expression profile analysis is powerful in the identification of biological differences between end stage renal failure patients and healthy controls. Previous studies mainly used variance/regression analysis without considering various biological, environmental factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the gene expression difference between end stage renal failure patients and healthy controls with partial least squares (PLS) based analysis. ⋯ The virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1450799302127207.
