Multicenter StudyAssociation of emergency department care factors with admission and discharge decisions for pediatric patients.
We evaluated overutilization or underutilization of inpatient resources to measure the emergency department (ED) decision-making process and its association with the following care factors: annual pediatric volume, presence or absence of a pediatric emergency medicine specialist; and presence or absence of ED residents. ⋯ There is significant variability in ED decision-making for children. Residents but not volume or presence of a pediatric emergency medicine specialist are associated with increased differences in admission decisions. The process by which these differences occur was not investigated.

Multicenter StudySudden infant death syndrome: risk factors for infants found face down differ from other SIDS cases.
To test the hypothesis that infants with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) found face down (FD) would have SIDS risk factors different from those found in other positions (non-face-down position, NFD). ⋯ Infants with SIDS in the FD position appear to be a distinct subgroup of SIDS. These differences in risk factors provide clues to mechanisms of death in both SIDS subtypes.

Multicenter StudyA multicenter study of the outcome of biliary atresia in the United States, 1997 to 2000.
To determine the prognostic factors and optimal approaches to the diagnosis and management of biliary atresia, the leading indication for liver transplantation in children. ⋯ Outcome in the study centers was equivalent to that reported in other countries. Total bilirubin in early follow-up after HPE was highly predictive of outcome. Efforts to improve bile flow after HPE may lead to improved outcome in children with biliary atresia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyNoninvasive therapy with helium-oxygen for severe bronchiolitis.
To determine whether noninvasive therapy using a helium-oxygen mixture reduces the use of positive-pressure ventilation in the treatment of respiratory failure caused by severe bronchiolitis. ⋯ This study did not detect any differences between the patients in the helium group and the control group with respect to the rate of positive-pressure ventilation.

Multicenter StudyPotential medication dosing errors in outpatient pediatrics.
To determine the prevalence of potential dosing errors of medication dispensed to children for 22 common medications. ⋯ Potential medication dosing errors occur frequently in outpatient pediatrics. Studies on the clinical impact of these potential errors and effective error prevention strategies are needed.
