Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) based metabolomics analysis is extensively used to explore the metabolic profiling of biofluids. This approach was used for the analysis of metabolites in serum of patients with major types of muscular dystrophy in early phase of the disease. ⋯ Outcome of this study may be useful as supportive information for the existing diagnostic methods of the muscular dystrophy.

Our objective was to compare the protective efficacy of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) against liver ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) and to evaluate their combined protective effect in mouse liver transplantation (MLT). ⋯ Based on the synergistic and addictive effect on liver IRI induced by MLT between IPC and RIPC, the study suggested ways in which combined preconditionings could be elicited in patients undergoing planned procedures complicated by IRI to support better outcomes.

To investigate the effects of exogenous carcinoembryonic antigen related cellular adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) on ulcerative colitis (UC) in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model. ⋯ Exogenous CEACAM1 effectively rescues the symptoms of UC in DSS mice through preventing inflammatory responses, improving epithelial barrier and promoting epithelial cells restitution.

Despite impressive survival benefits from new agents to treat metastasized prostate cancer (PCa), progressive drug resistance hinders long-term response and restricts the efficacy of subsequent therapy. Due to reported antitumor activity of amygdalin and growing popularity for complementary and alternative medicine the potential of this natural, widely used substance to exert antineoplastic effects on prostate cancer cells has been assessed. ⋯ Amygdalin exhibits significant antitumor activity in both castration-sensitive and castration-resistant PCa cell lines and merits further evaluation for therapeutic purposes.

Clinical studies have shown that very low protein diet (VLPD) has negative effects on long-term survival. It remains unclear why VLPD induces premature death. The present study determined the underlying mechanism whereby VLPD exerts its harmful effects on uremic rats. ⋯ VLPD enhances inflammation, malnutrition, and vascular calcification in uremic rats, among which only vascular calcification is prevented by dietary phosphate restriction.
