We recently reported a grading system for surgical complications. This system proved to have a high sensitivity for recording minor but meaningful complications prolonging hospital stay in patients after colorectal surgery. We aimed to prospectively validate the complication grading system in a general surgery department over 1 year. ⋯ This system of grading surgical complications permits standardized reporting of surgical morbidity according to the severity of impact. Prospective validation of this system supports its use in a general surgery setting as a tool for surgical outcome assessment and quality assurance.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide health problem, identified as a major cause of death and disability. Increasing evidence has shown that oxidative stress plays an important role in TBI pathogenesis. The antioxidant transcription factor, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), is a known mediator in protection against TBI-induced brain damage. The objective of this study was to test whether tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), a novel Nrf2 activator, can protect against TBI-induced oxidative stress. ⋯ Pretreatment with tBHQ effectively attenuated markers of cerebral oxidative stress after TBI, thus supporting the testing of tBHQ as a potential neuroprotectant and adjunct therapy for TBI patients.

Although the relationship between psychoactive substance use and injury is known, evidence remains conflicting on the impact of substance use on clinical outcomes after injury. We hypothesized that preinjury substance use would negatively impact clinical outcomes. ⋯ Females and those aged >45 y are less likely to receive BASs and UDSs. Differential screening that is biased may place patients at risk for receiving inadequate care.

The recruitment of neutrophils plays an important role in the progress of acute lung injury (ALI). Excessive neutrophils released from bone marrow accumulate in lung, release proinflammatory factors, and cause tissue damage. CXCL-12/CXCR4 is an important signaling pathway, which regulates the migration of bone marrow hematopoietic cells out of bone marrow and involves in neutrophil accumulation and retention in the inflammatory site. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is a kind of lipid mediators, which can alleviate many inflammatory diseases. We hypothesized that RvD1 can alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI through regulating CXCL-12/CXCR4 pathway. ⋯ RvD1 protects LPS-induced ALI partially through regulating CXCL-12/CXCR4 pathway.

Inflammatory pain is one of the most common clinical symptoms, mechanical allodynia and thermal hypersensitivities are associated with proinflammatory cytokines, and proinflammatory cytokine antagonists could alleviate the hypersensitivity. Previous studies showed that a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient, triptolide could inhibit inflammatory cytokines; however, it was still unknown whether triptolide had beneficial effects on treating inflammatory pain. ⋯ In the present study, we first reported that repeated systemic administration of triptolide could safely prevent and reverse inflammatory pain. The triptolide may serve as a new potential compound for developing safe therapeutics for patients suffering inflammatory pain.
