Traumatic head injury is turning out to be a major cause of disability and death. Nitric oxide (NO), an intercellular messenger plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of several neurologic disorders. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effects of rutin, a well-known flavonoid against cognitive deficits and neuroinflammation associated with traumatic head injury and the probable role of NO pathway in this effect. ⋯ The present study suggests that NO modulation could possibly be involved in the neuroprotective effects of rutin against head trauma-induced cognitive deficits, neuroinflammation, and apoptotic signaling cascade.

Inflammatory pain is one of the most common clinical symptoms, mechanical allodynia and thermal hypersensitivities are associated with proinflammatory cytokines, and proinflammatory cytokine antagonists could alleviate the hypersensitivity. Previous studies showed that a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient, triptolide could inhibit inflammatory cytokines; however, it was still unknown whether triptolide had beneficial effects on treating inflammatory pain. ⋯ In the present study, we first reported that repeated systemic administration of triptolide could safely prevent and reverse inflammatory pain. The triptolide may serve as a new potential compound for developing safe therapeutics for patients suffering inflammatory pain.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Systematic review with meta-analysis of studies comparing intraoperative neuromonitoring of recurrent laryngeal nerves versus visualization alone during thyroidectomy.
The role of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during thyroid surgery is still debatable. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the potential improvement of IONM versus RLN visualization alone (VA) in reducing the incidence of vocal cord palsy. ⋯ The current review with meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the incidence of RLN palsy when using IONM versus VA during thyroidectomy. However, these results must be approached with caution, as they were mainly based on data coming from non-randomized observational studies. Further studies including high-quality multicenter, prospective, randomized trials based on strict criteria of standardization and subsequent clustered meta-analysis are required to verify the outcomes of interest.

Identification and interference of intraoperative distractions and interruptions in operating rooms.
Intraoperative interruptions potentially interfere with surgical flow, contribute to patient safety risks, and increase stress. This study aimed to observe interruption events in operating rooms (ORs) and to measure surgical team's intraoperative interference from interruptions during surgery. ⋯ The study demonstrates the high level of interference in ORs. Furthermore, it provides a useful measure for intraoperative workflow disruptions and their interference of OR team functioning. OR environments need to be well designed to reduce unnecessary interruptions and distractions, so that surgical teams can manage their surgical tasks efficiently and safely.

The recruitment of neutrophils plays an important role in the progress of acute lung injury (ALI). Excessive neutrophils released from bone marrow accumulate in lung, release proinflammatory factors, and cause tissue damage. CXCL-12/CXCR4 is an important signaling pathway, which regulates the migration of bone marrow hematopoietic cells out of bone marrow and involves in neutrophil accumulation and retention in the inflammatory site. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is a kind of lipid mediators, which can alleviate many inflammatory diseases. We hypothesized that RvD1 can alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI through regulating CXCL-12/CXCR4 pathway. ⋯ RvD1 protects LPS-induced ALI partially through regulating CXCL-12/CXCR4 pathway.
