This investigation aimed to document surgical capacity at public medical centers in a middle-income Latin American country using the Surgeons OverSeas (SOS) Personnel, Infrastructure, Procedures, Equipment, and Supplies (PIPES) survey tool. ⋯ This investigation is novel in its application of a Spanish-language version of the PIPES tool in a middle-income Latin American country. These data document substantially greater surgical capacity in Santa Cruz than has been reported for Sierra Leone or Rwanda, consistent with Bolivia's development status. Unfortunately, surgeons are limited in rural areas by deficits in anesthesia and perioperative services. These results are currently being used to target local quality improvement initiatives.

Impaired gut barrier function and acute lung injury (ALI) are significant components of the multiorgan dysfunction syndrome that accompanies severe burns. Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) has been shown to reduce inflammation, preserve gut barrier function, and protect the lungs from acute injury in several models of intestinal injury; however, comparable effects of HB-EGF after burn injury have never been investigated. The present studies were based on the hypothesis that HB-EGF would reduce the severity of ALI and multiorgan dysfunction after scald burns in mice. ⋯ These data suggest that HB-EGF protects mice from ALI after scald burn and attenuates the severity of postburn multiorgan dysfunction.

The sepsis-induced acute liver injury majorly depends on the dysfunction of mitochondria and the loss of cellular energy. Aquaporin 8 (AQP8) can modulate water transport and osmotic swelling of mitochondria in the inner mitochondrial membrane of the liver. In this study, we explore the effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) on protecting the structure of hepatocyte mitochondria and modulating the expression of AQP8. ⋯ TMP has protective effect on hepatocellular mitochondria from damage in sepsis by ameliorating the expression of AQP8 protein in liver mitochondria. The protective effect of TMP on the liver mitochondria might not have a difference between using TMP before or after the occurrence of sepsis.

Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is an ideal tool for noninvasive, quantitative monitoring of tumor progression/regression in animal models. The effectiveness of different treatment strategies is displayed by an altered intensity of bioluminescence, demonstrating a change of the tumor burden. The aim of this study was to establish a reliable, reproducible colorectal hepatic metastases cancer animal model. ⋯ BLI is an important tool with many potential advantages for investigators. The measurement of intrahepatic tumor growth by imaging luciferase activity noninvasively provides valuable information on tumor burden and effectiveness of therapy. Thus, the presented intrahepatic metastases model based on the growth of HCT-116 Luc(pos) cells is suitable for in vivo testing of different cancer therapy strategies.

Operations on the infrarenal aorta can cause ischemic-reperfusion (IR) injury in local tissues, which could result in remote organ (e.g., lung) damage. Treatment of such injuries remains an unresolved problem. ⋯ Postconditioning reduced lung damage under experimental conditions, in the early period of reperfusion after lower limb IR injury.
