We sought to elucidate whether minocycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic with potent anti-inflammation capacity, could mitigate inflammatory response and organ dysfunction in the lungs and liver induced by hemorrhagic shock/resuscitation (HS) plus abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). ⋯ Minocycline ameliorates inflammatory response and organ dysfunction in the lungs and liver induced by hemorrhagic shock/resuscitation plus abdominal compartment syndrome.

Operating room time is highly resource intensive, and delays can be a source of lost revenue and surgeon frustration. Methods to decrease these delays are important not only for patient care, but to maximize operating room resource utilization. The purpose of this study was to determine the root cause of operating room delays in a standardized manner to help improve overall operating room efficiency. ⋯ A standardized postoperative debrief tracking system is highly beneficial in identifying and reducing overall operative delays and improving operating room utilization.

Clinical trials evaluating the use of steroids in septic shock have shown variable outcomes. Our previous studies have implicated human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) polymorphisms as a possible cause of altered steroid response. To further evaluate this variability, we hypothesized that hGR polymorphisms along with type of steroid influence the functional response. ⋯ SNPs, type of steroid, and concentration range impact the functional response of the hGR. A greater understanding of hGR polymorphisms and steroid response may further elucidate mechanisms explaining the variable response seen with patient treatment.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a serious clinical complication that may compromise liver function because of extensive hepatocyte loss. Therefore, the development of novel and effective therapies for hepatic I/R is critical for the improvement of patient outcome. It has been previously shown that administration of milk fat globule-EGF factor VIII (MFG-E8), a membrane-associated secretory glycoprotein, exerts significant beneficial effects under acute inflammatory conditions through multiple physiological processes associated with tissue remodeling. ⋯ MFG-E8-mediated multiple physiological events may represent an effective therapeutic option in tissue injury following an episode of hepatic I/R.

Sivelestat sodium hydrate is a specific neutrophil elastase inhibitor effective in acute lung injury (ALI) associated with systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Bowel ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) induced by supravisceral aortic clamping is associated with an excessive systemic inflammatory response, resulting in remote organ damage, including ALI. In this study, we investigated whether sivelestat can attenuate neutrophil sequestration in the lung, alleviate ALI, and improve survival in a rat bowel IRI model. ⋯ In a rat model, administration of sivelestat attenuated the effects of bowel IRI induced by supravisceral aortic clamping, and improved the survival rate.
