Observational StudyPostoperative atrial fibrillation and total dietary antioxidant capacity in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: The Polyphemus Observational Study.
Postoperative atrial fibrillation is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for stroke after cardiac surgery. Both systemic inflammation and oxidative stress play a role in the initiation of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. The possible association between long-term intake of antioxidant-rich foods and postoperative atrial fibrillation incidence was examined in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ Long-term consumption of antioxidant-rich foods is associated with a reduced incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Comparative StudyCharacterization of ventricular assist device-mediated sensitization in the bridge-to-heart-transplantation patient.
Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are associated with increased anti-human leukocyte antigen antibody production. The purpose of this study is to characterize differences in sensitization patterns in patients receiving axial flow, implantable VADs versus pulsatile, paracorporeal biventricular assist devices (BIVADs) as bridges to transplantation. ⋯ Device type was not a factor in patient sensitization after implantation. However, VAD patients required pre-existing sensitization before implantation to produce antibodies during their treatment interval, whereas more than two thirds of BIVAD patients developed de novo antibodies. These data suggest that the mechanism of sensitization between VAD and BIVAD patients may differ, and further mechanistic studies into the impact of device types on patient sensitization are warranted.

WebcastsLate outcomes after arterial switch operation for Taussig-Bing anomaly.
To assess the long-term results of the arterial switch operation (ASO) for Taussig-Bing Anomaly (TBA) and identify risk factors affecting outcomes. ⋯ In the largest series to date of ASO for TBA, mortality is confined to the first postoperative year, and related to coronary artery pattern. Beyond the first year, needed reinterventions are frequent, but with sustained functional status and no mortality over >10 years follow-up. Aortic arch obstruction is the main predictor for reintervention. Despite a significant rate of early events, favorable long-term outcomes argue for use of the ASO in TBA patients.
