Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEndoscopic myringoplasty: comparison of double layer cartilage-perichondrium graft and single fascia grafting.
To compare surgical results of endoscopic myringoplasty using double layer cartilage-perichondrium grafts versus single fascia grafts. ⋯ The endoscopic double layer perichondrium-cartilage graft technique is feasible for repairing medium or larger perforations, it has a better long-term graft success rate and less operative time compared with the single layer fascia graft technique. However, long-term hearing outcomes were the same for the single and double layer closure techniques.

Randomized Controlled TrialA randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of trans-tympanic injections of a sodium thiosulfate gel to prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in patients with head and neck cancer.
Cisplatin-induced hearing loss is frequent and severe. Antioxidants such as sodium thiosulfate (STS) can neutralize the effects of cisplatin. The objective of the trial was to test the efficacy of trans-tympanic injections of a STS gel to prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. ⋯ Our trial suggests that STS deposited on the round window was safe for the middle and inner ears. More work is needed to improve the efficacy of trans-tympanic injections of cisplatin antidotes.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe new age of play audiometry: prospective validation testing of an iPad-based play audiometer.
The timely diagnosis of hearing loss in the pediatric population has significant implications for a child's development. However, audiological evaluation in this population poses unique challenges due to difficulties with patient cooperation. Though specialized adaptations exist (such as conditioned play audiometry), these methods can be time consuming and costly. The objective of this study was to validate an iPad-based play audiometer that addresses the shortcomings of existing audiometry. ⋯ The tablet audiometer is a valid and sensitive instrument for screening and assessment of warble-tone thresholds in children.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEfficacy and safety of high-concentration adrenaline wicks during functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
Epinephrine is a commonly used vasoconstrictor for instillation or infiltration to limit bleeding and improve the quality of the surgical field in functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). No study to date has shown the efficacy of varying concentrations of adrenaline wicks into the nasal mucosa during FESS. ⋯ High-concentration (4 mg in 20 mL of saline) adrenaline wicks used during FESS significantly improve the quality of the surgical field and decrease blood loss compared to low-concentration (1 mg in 20 mL saline) wicks. Associated hemodynamic changes can be controlled in both groups without significant clinical consequences.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyPain and discomfort during flexible nasolaryngoscopy: a randomized, controlled trial assessing the efficacy of oral mouthwash and topical lidocaine.
To test the hypothesis that using Listerine mouthwash prior to administration of topical nasal lidocaine will result in improved pain and comfort outcomes during flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL). ⋯ Using Listerine prior to application of lidocaine nasal spray reduces the pain and discomfort of FNL. This effect was most clinically significant in patients undergoing an extended or full bilateral nasal examination.
