Evaluation of maxillary anterior teeth width: A systematic review.
Estimating the width of the maxillary anterior teeth when creating an esthetic smile can be challenging. Valid metrics to assist in this process are needed. ⋯ By analyzing the data from the literature, only the recurring esthetic dental proportion (70%) with interalar distance could be an accurate method for predicting the combined width of central incisors. Neither interalar distance nor inner canthal distance could directly be used to predict the intercanine distance.

Risk of bias assessment of systematic reviews regarding dental implant placement in smokers: An umbrella systematic review.
Although dental implant treatment has a high success rate, patient-related factors may cause implant failure. In this context, smoking is associated with adverse effects on implant osseointegration. In spite of systematic reviews addressing this topic, the risk of bias in these reviews must be assessed to inform readers whether the studies were conducted with methodological rigor and whether their recommendations are viable in daily clinical practice. ⋯ Five of the 6 included meta-analyses had a risk of bias (high or unclear). Therefore, their conclusions and recommendations required careful review. Future meta-analyses must focus especially on study eligibility criteria and identification and selection of studies.

Dental caries is a transmissible, complex biofilm disease that creates prolonged periods of low pH in the mouth, resulting in a net mineral loss from the teeth. Historically, the disease model for dental caries consisted of mutans streptococci and Lactobacillus species, and the dental profession focused on restoring the lesions/damage from the disease by using a surgical model. ⋯ The risk of caries, however, is usually related to just a few common factors, and these factors result in common patterns of disease. This article examines the biofilm model of dental caries, identifies the common disease patterns, and discusses their targeted therapeutic strategies to make CAMBRA more easily adaptable for the privately practicing professional.

Controversy continues in the area of epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The field is replete with testimonials and clinical opinion, but it has been lacking in scientific foundation. ⋯ Because little is known about the natural course of the various classifications of temporomandibular disorders, and because most treatment approaches are reported to be equally effective, a conservative, noninvasive management program is endorsed. The emphasis is on a medical multidisciplinary model similar to ones used for other musculoskeletal disorders that involve the patient in the physical and behavioral management of his or her own problem. This article concludes that a majority of temporomandibular disorder patients achieve good relief of symptoms with noninvasive reversible therapy.
