Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialIntravesical morphine analgesia is not effective after bladder surgery in children: results of a randomied double-blind study.
Intravesical morphine was recently recommended to reduce postoperative pain after reimplantation surgery for vesicoureteral reflux in children. The efficacy of such treatment, so far solely evaluated by open study, needed to be confirmed. ⋯ Intravesical administration of morphine is not effective for relieving postoperative pain during the first 48 hours after intravesical ureteral reimplantation. This study emphasizes the importance of controlled studies in evaluating the effectiveness of a new drug or procedure before recommending its use for all patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialEvaluation of an unconventional treatment modality with mistletoe lectin to prevent recurrence of superficial bladder cancer: a randomized phase II trial.
The indication for topic chemotherapy or immunotherapy for well differentiated, noninvasive superficial bladder cancer remains controversial. Side effects of these treatments promoted use of unconventional therapies with cytokines, immunomodulators and mistletoe extracts. However, there are no controlled clinical data available on the efficacy of these extracts for bladder cancer. We evaluate the influence of subcutaneously applicated mistletoe lectin on bladder tumor recurrence after transurethral resection. ⋯ Subcutaneous use of mistletoe lectin as adjuvant treatment after transurethral resection does not seem to affect the time to first recurrence, total number of recurrences or recurrence-free outcome.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialIs ureteral stenting necessary after uncomplicated ureteroscopic lithotripsy? A prospective, randomized controlled trial.
We conducted a prospective, randomized controlled study to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of ureteral stenting after ureteroscopic lithotripsy. ⋯ After uncomplicated ureteroscopic electrohydraulic lithotripsy patients without ureteral stenting tend to have similar renal function recovery and satisfactory pain reduction with less irritative symptoms compared to those treated with a ureteral stent. We suggest that it is not necessary to place a ureteral stent routinely after uncomplicated ureteroscopic electrohydraulic lithotripsy for stones smaller than 1 cm.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialThe effect of bench model fidelity on endourological skills: a randomized controlled study.
Complex skills, such as ureteroscopy and stone extraction, are increasingly taught to novice urology trainees using bench models in surgical skills laboratories. We determined whether hands-on training improved the performance of novices more than those taught only by a didactic session and whether there was a difference in the performance of subjects taught on a low versus a high fidelity model. ⋯ Hands-on training using bench models can be successful for teaching novices complex endourological skills. A low fidelity bench model is a more cost-effective means of teaching ureteroscopic skills to novices than a high fidelity model.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialLocal anesthesia for prostate biopsy by periprostatic lidocaine injection: a double-blind placebo controlled study.
We determined the efficacy of anesthesia for prostate biopsy by periprostatic lidocaine injection. ⋯ Periprostatic lidocaine injection is an effective method of anesthesia for prostate biopsy.
