Presenteeism is defined as employees being present at work but unable to be fully engaged in the work environment. Although presenteeism is pervasive in the workplace, the effects of the condition on employee health and productivity are less well understood. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the concept of presenteeism, including research and management practices.

The potential for biological, chemical, radiological, or nuclear terrorism has been widely acknowledged since the events of September 11, 2001. Terrorists' use of a radiological dispersal device (RDD), or dirty bomb, is considered to be a threat for which Americans must prepare. ⋯ Occupational health nurses are prepared to assess and treat RDD causalities using current information to identify signs and symptoms of exposed and contaminated RDD victims. Decontamination, treatment, and recovery methods for workers and businesses affected by an RDD event are described.

In 2005, the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. introduced a new credential in safety management for certified occupational health nurses. To date, 11 nurses have attained this credential and several of those have advanced to the Certified Safety Professional designation. ⋯ It also discusses problems in the application process observed by the administrators, and offers suggestions to prepare for the examination. Nurses who have attained the Safety Manager credential were surveyed for advice to those considering certification.

The ecological model of disaster management provides a framework to guide occupational health nurses who are developing disaster management programs. This ecological model assumes that disaster planning, preparedness, response, and recovery occur at various levels of the organization. ⋯ In addition to the features of the hazard or disaster, it is also assumed that parallel disaster planning, preparedness, and response elements, logistical challenges, and flexibility, sustainability, and rehabilitation elements occur at each level of the ecological model. Finally, the model assumes that evaluation of response and recovery efforts should inform future planning and preparedness efforts.
