The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence on the serum/plasma leptin concentrations in breast cancer (BC) patients, as well as the associations between leptin G-2548A gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to BC. ⋯ Our results revealed a significantly higher leptin level in BC patients than in healthy controls, but no association between leptin G-2548A polymorphism and BC susceptibility was found.

TP53 and MGMT alterations play a crucial role in glioblastoma (GB) pathogenesis. TP53 and MGMT function is affected by several pathologic mechanisms, such as point mutations or promoter methylation, which are well characterized. Expression of both genes can be regulated by other mechanisms as well, e.g., microRNAs (miRNAs). Moreover, cross-talk among various pathologic processes may occur, further affecting MGMT and TP53 functionality. ⋯ Our findings demonstrate that selected miRNAs are significantly correlated with MGMT and TP53 levels, but the extent of this correlation differs regarding the TP53 and MGMT mutational and promoter methylation status.

Spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall are common in liver cirrhosis. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall on the outcomes of cirrhotic patients. ⋯ Presence of spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall indicated more severe liver dysfunction. Subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall should be a simple and important predictor for the overall survival of cirrhotic patients.

Statins are widely used in stroke patients. The AHA/ASA guidelines recommend aggressive statin therapy in atherosclerotic stroke patients. Their beneficial effects are due to both their hypolipemic and pleiotropic properties. The aim of this study was to establish potential benefits from statin use in ischemic stroke patients with the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). ⋯ Despite the predominant use of statins in atherothrombotic stroke patients, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of statins in cardioembolic stroke patients. Detailed cardiovascular screening for statin therapy should be carried out in all AF patients with regard to primary and secondary stroke prevention.

Ischaemic heart disease is the main cause of death in developed countries. There are many modifiable risk factors associated with coronary heart disease (CAD). A growing number of studies point to vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for heart attacks and the conditions associated with cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and the severity of coronary artery atherosclerosis and to study 25(OH)D levels in non-diabetic patients hospitalised due to acute coronary syndrome and those diagnosed with stable CAD. ⋯ Patients with one- to three-vessel atherosclerosis have a significantly lower 25(OH)D level compared to patients without significant lesions in the coronary arteries. A lower 25(OH)D level was observed in patients hospitalised due to acute coronary syndrome compared to patients diagnosed with stable CAD.
