Interaction between obesity and genetic factors involved in the regulatory pathways of glucose homeostasis may play a significant role in diabetes development in the obese. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the TCF7L2 rs7903146 polymorphism, adiponectin levels, age at onset of obesity and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a sample of obese Polish adults. ⋯ Our study highlights the significance of the relationship between the TCF7L2 polymorphism, a person's age at onset of obesity and the prevalence of T2D, and confirms lower adiponectin levels in obese diabetics in comparison to obese nondiabetics.

TP53 and MGMT alterations play a crucial role in glioblastoma (GB) pathogenesis. TP53 and MGMT function is affected by several pathologic mechanisms, such as point mutations or promoter methylation, which are well characterized. Expression of both genes can be regulated by other mechanisms as well, e.g., microRNAs (miRNAs). Moreover, cross-talk among various pathologic processes may occur, further affecting MGMT and TP53 functionality. ⋯ Our findings demonstrate that selected miRNAs are significantly correlated with MGMT and TP53 levels, but the extent of this correlation differs regarding the TP53 and MGMT mutational and promoter methylation status.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to summarize the evidence on the serum/plasma leptin concentrations in breast cancer (BC) patients, as well as the associations between leptin G-2548A gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to BC. ⋯ Our results revealed a significantly higher leptin level in BC patients than in healthy controls, but no association between leptin G-2548A polymorphism and BC susceptibility was found.

There is an academic debate over surgical treatments of liver hydatid cyst disease. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out in order to evaluate the pros and cons of both PAIR (Puncture, Aspiration, Injection, Respiration) and laparoscopic techniques by considering the outcomes of liver hydatid cysts. ⋯ This study shows promising trends toward an advantage of PAIR procedures in treatment of liver hydatid cyst in comparison with laparoscopic procedures. The PAIR procedure is superior to laparoscopy due to having a higher cure rate and lower complication and mortality rates; however, the latter has a lower recurrence rate.

Spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall are common in liver cirrhosis. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall on the outcomes of cirrhotic patients. ⋯ Presence of spider nevus and subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall indicated more severe liver dysfunction. Subcutaneous collateral vessel of the chest/abdominal wall should be a simple and important predictor for the overall survival of cirrhotic patients.
