There are reports that diabetes mellitus reduces the risk of aortic aneurysms and many reports that diabetes mellitus reduces the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms. In earlier years there were also studies that did not demonstrate any effects of diabetes on the rate of aortic aneurysms. ⋯ Aortic aneurysms were more frequently observed in the group of patients with diabetes than in those without diabetes. Aortic aneurysms were observed three times more frequently in men than in women. In Poland in 2012, 27.20% of patients diagnosed with aortic aneurysms also had diabetes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two nutraceutical agents aimed to improve lipid profile in a sample of mice. ⋯ We can conclude that a combination of monacolin K 3%, γ-oryzanol, and γ-aminobutyric acid is more effective than monacolin K 3% alone in reducing the negative effects of a HFD in a sample of specific pathogen-free mice.

Infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are a serious therapeutic and clinical problem. An increasing role of ESBL(+) pathogens is observed in both community- and hospital-acquired infections. The aim of the study was to assess the incidence and the risk factors for ESBL(+) bacteria infection in a pediatric ward during a 5-year period. ⋯ The results confirm the rising trend of ESBL (+) infections during the observed period. ESBL (+) bacteria were isolated primarily in previously hospitalized children with particular reference to urinary tract invasive procedures during hospitalizations. Moreover, the study showed that patients with urogenital disorders and non-urinary chronic diseases are more susceptible to these priority pathogen infections.

The yield of genetic testing in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is variable. The Mayo HCM Genotype Predictor score (Mayo Score) provides the pre-test probability of a positive HCM genetic test. In the original cohort of Mayo Score patients, only 9 HCM-associated myofilament genes were evaluated. The aim of this study was to validate the Mayo Score in the national HCM cohort and assess the yield of genetic testing using next generation sequencing (NGS) evaluating up to 229 genes. ⋯ The overall yield of genetic testing using NGS evaluating up to 229 genes was low. The yield of genetic testing was consistently predicted with Mayo Score values.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the commonest endocrinopathy of women in reproductive age, is often accompanied by insulin resistance (IR), hirsutism and/or fertility problems. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of IR in women diagnosed with PCOS. ⋯ The insulin resistance (Belfiore) index indicates more cases of insulin resistance than HOMA-IR in women with PCOS. Therefore, detection of insulin resistance among women with PCOS is highly method-dependent with more severe cases being detected with HOMA-IR than with IRI.
