Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) represents the primary lipoprotein target for reducing cardiovascular risk (CV). The aim of our study is to compare the direct and the calculated LDL-C levels in the range below 1.8 mmol/l and 2.6 mmol/l depending on triglycerides, and to evaluate the variation in remnant lipoprotein cholesterol. ⋯ The Friedewald equation tends to underestimate LDL-C levels in very high and high-risk settings. Our analysis supports the conclusion that in Hungarian patients, LDL-C estimation using the Martin/Hopkins formula, which is validated by the beta-quantification method, yields a more accurate LDL-C value than that calculated by the Friedewald formula.

Anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG seropositive and/or titer are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, it is not clear whether CMV end-organ disease may have a relation with development of CVD or chronic heart diseases. ⋯ Symptomatic CMV tissue-invasive diseases were associated with a higher risk of new-onset MI and CHF.

The present study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of selected novel parameters as biomarkers of hypertension: miR-145-5p, miR-1-3p, miR-423-5p, PCSK9, MyBPC3, NOX1, and CYBb, and NCF2, DNase 1, anti-MPO and anti-PR3 antibodies. ⋯ PCSK9 shows the greatest potential as an early biomarker of screening-detected hypertension.

In recent years, unfortunately, low quality of statistical analyses in medicine has been observed. As it turns out, this also applies to COVID-19 subject matter. ⋯ There should be more emphasis on conducting statistical reviews in authors' contributions on various aspects of COVID-19.

The impact of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) on the risk of different types of strokes is unclear. Therefore, we systematically evaluated the impact of LDL-C levels (cohort studies) and lipid-lowering agents (LLAs) (randomized controlled trials) on the different types of stroke. ⋯ Our study sheds light on the debatable association between low LDL-C and different type of strokes. This information can help determine the optimal LDL-C range for stroke prevention, and help plan future LLA studies.
