The majority of hepatitis E (HE) reports come from Western Europe. The aim of the study was to describe the typical epidemiological and clinical characteristics of HE in the Czech Republic. ⋯ There is a possibility of severe health complications caused by the hepatitis E virus in the Czech Republic.

The precise pathogenesis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is yet to be fully elucidated. The role of epigenetics in the pathogenesis of HT has scarcely been addressed. Tri-methylated histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4me3) is generally regarded as a marker of gene activation. The aim of this study was to explore genome-wide H3K4me3 patterns and global protein levels in primary thyrocytes and thyroids from HT patients. ⋯ This first investigation of genome-wide H3K4me3 distribution in thyroid follicular cells suggested that genes associated with autoimmune thyroiditis showed differential H3K4me3 enrichment, which was partly related to gene expression. Global H3K4me3 changes and increased MLL1 expression were found in thyroid tissues from HT patients.

Gastric cancer is a frequently detected malignancy, and its incidence has increased over the past decades in East Asia. The present study investigated the effect of 5,7,2, 5-tetrahydroxy-8,6-dimethoxyflavone (THDMF) on gastric cancer cells and explored the underlying mechanism. The study analysed cell viability changes, apoptotic features, and metastasis potential of treatment with THDMF. ⋯ THDMF exhibits anti-cancer effect on gastric cancer cells in vitro by activation of cell apoptosis and arrest of cell cycle. In addition, THDMF promoted miR-145 expression and down-regulation of PI3K/AKT signalling pathway in MKN28 cells. Therefore, THDMF may be utilised as a potential novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of gastric cancer.

The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is widely used as a diagnostic tool for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in clinical settings and animal experiments. The area under the curve (AUC) is then developed to quantify the total increase in blood glucose during the OGTT. Similarly, attenuation of the increased AUC indicates the improvement of IGT in animals. Variations in fasting plasma glucose between individuals stimulate the development of incremental area under the curve (iAUC). However, the iAUC determined from subtracting the baseline value of fasting plasma glucose (similar to ΔAUC) has been challenged as problematic without evidence. ⋯ iAUC seems unsuitable for application in cases where subjects are receiving chronic medication(s).

This systematic review and meta-analysis focuses on PCSK9 changes in obese patients following bariatric surgery. ⋯ PCSK9 is reduced significantly after bariatric surgery. The decrease of PCSK9 might be utilized as an independent surrogate marker of improvement of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk after bariatric surgery.
