Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have the characteristics of cancer stem cells and play an important role in the recurrence and metastasis of tumors. CD44 is a surface marker molecule for gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) and can be used to identify and isolate GCSCs. Here, we investigated the effect of CD44 protein expression, circulating tumor cells, and CD44-positive CTCs on the prognosis of gastric cancer (GC). ⋯ The detection of stem cell characteristics of GC CTCs can provide more prognostic information than simply detecting GC CTCs and GC CD44 expression.

The appropriate use of antibiotics is an important strategy in slowing the development of antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to evaluate antibiotic consumption and antibiotic use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pre-pandemic period and pandemic period. ⋯ It was observed that the use of many intravenous antibiotics in our hospital increased during the pandemic period.

A potential way to explain the relationships between sleep disorders and cognitive disorders during menopausal transition is the identification of genetic markers related to changes in cognitive functions, as well as changes in quality of sleep during menopause. The objective was an analysis of the relationship between sleep disorders and cognitive disorders, according to the possessed oestrogen receptor α gene polymorphism (ESR1) in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. ⋯ The results indicate an important role of oestrogen receptor α gene polymorphism in the modulation of the effect of insomnia on cognitive functions in peri- and postmenopausal women.

The vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) and the Breast Lesion Excision System (BLES) are minimally invasive biopsy techniques, both used as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The aim of the study is to compare these two methods and assess them in the context of discomfort, early and late complications and their diagnostic and therapeutic potential. ⋯ Since the BLES breast biopsy makes it possible to evaluate the margins, it is a good alternative to the open breast biopsy.

More than half of the world's population is infected with Helicobacter pylori, which may cause gastritis, peptic ulcer and even gastric cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that H. pylori infection is a class I carcinogen and hence eradication of it is highly important. Bovine milk contains caseins, which can be digested by various enzymes in the human stomach to produce antibacterial peptides. ⋯ This study identified the anti-H. pylori effects of casecidin 17 and β-casein 207-224, which may help in developing therapeutic agents to modulate the effect of antibiotics on H. pylori infections.
