Apolipoprotein complement is a critical determinant of lipoprotein function and metabolism. The relation between exogenous insulin and apolipoproteins (apos) in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has not yet been studied extensively. The aim of this study was to prospectively observe the changes in serum apos AI (apo AI) and AII (apo AII) in patients with newly diagnosed T1DM and their association with the daily insulin requirement. ⋯ In the first year of T1DM, there is a significant increase in apos concentration. Due to the significant deviation of apos concentration from accepted norms, changes in the recommendations of lipid control criteria in T1DM may be considered.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have the characteristics of cancer stem cells and play an important role in the recurrence and metastasis of tumors. CD44 is a surface marker molecule for gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) and can be used to identify and isolate GCSCs. Here, we investigated the effect of CD44 protein expression, circulating tumor cells, and CD44-positive CTCs on the prognosis of gastric cancer (GC). ⋯ The detection of stem cell characteristics of GC CTCs can provide more prognostic information than simply detecting GC CTCs and GC CD44 expression.

Lower extremity venous insufficiency is a significant health problem with economic and sociological consequences, lowering the quality of life, and sometimes leading to serious complications. The aim of this study is to evaluate the cytomegalovirus (CMV) effect on chronic inflammation in the aetiology of chronic venous insufficiency. ⋯ In the literature there are many studies showing that CMV triggers atherosclerosis, but there is no study in which CMV directly produces chronic venous insufficiency. The high rates of positivity suggest that CMV, which is the basis of chronic inflammation, may be a significant factor in the aetiology of chronic venous insufficiency.

Frequently-relapsing/steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (FRSDNS) leads to steroid toxicity impairing quality of life (QOL), thus prompting the use of steroid-sparing drugs. ⋯ As first-line steroid-sparing agent, rituximab is more effective and safer than cyclophosphamide and tacrolimus in FRSDNS, and improve QOL.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an important complication of diabetes, which is the leading cause of ESRD worldwide. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of all-cause mortality in patients with ESRD with diagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM) and no diagnosed DM. ⋯ The occurrence of diabetes in patients with ESRD significantly increases the risk of death compared to patients with ESRD without diabetes.
