Due to an imbalanced redox status, cancer cells generate intrinsically higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared to normal cells. Targeting ROS is an important therapeutic strategy for cancer as exemplified by cancer drugs, which induce ROS-dependent synergistic cytotoxicity in gastric cancer cells. The present study was designed to assess the level of selected oxidative stress biomarkers in blood plasma derived from gastric cancer patients. ⋯ The present study indicates considerable oxidative/nitrative stress in gastric cancer patients. Our pilot study shows that not a single marker, but a biomarker panel, may be a more reliable representation of oxidative stress in patients with gastric cancer.

Long-term follow-up after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) presents a crucial challenge due to the high residual cardiovascular risk and the potential for major bleeding events. Although several treatment strategies are available, this article focuses on patients who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ACS, which is a frequent clinical situation. This position paper aims to support physicians in daily practice to improve the management of ACS patients. ⋯ This Expert Opinion aims to help clinicians with a practical guide underlying the proven strategies and the remaining gaps of evidence to optimize the management of coronary patients.

Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) represent almost 15% of the total energy intake in Western countries. Their effects on the cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are still controversial. Thus, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials (RCTs) as well as a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the links and possible causality between supplementation or serum levels of omega-6 PUFA, CV disease (CVD) and cardiometabolic risk factors. ⋯ Omega-6 PUFA supplementation did not affect the risk for CVD morbidity and mortality. Additionally, based on MR analysis we found that higher AA levels might even significantly increase the risk of CHD, MI and large artery stroke, as well as the levels of FBG and LDL-C, whereas they were negatively associated with TC and TG. Since a considerable chance of heterogeneity was observed for some of the results, further research is needed to elucidate the effects of omega-6 PUFAs on cardiometabolic outcomes.

The aim of our study was to evaluate testicular growth and risk of atrophy at different lengths of time from the 2SLF-SO in boys with intra-abdominal cryptorchidism. ⋯ Two-stage laparoscopic Fowler-Stevens operation proved to be an effective procedure for the treatment of intra-abdominal testicles. The undescended testis had a chance to grow and to equalize with the healthy testis after this procedure. The incidence of testicular atrophy was low.

The primary prevention is intended to prevent the development of diseases, secondary prevention aims to limit disease progression, and tertiary prevention involves reducing disease-associated symptoms. The purpose of this study was to assess the use of selected forms of secondary prevention by patients diagnosed with perennial allergic rhinitis. Moreover, this paper presents the ways in which the adopted organizational solutions could be utilized as part of coordinated healthcare to benefit patients with perennial allergies. ⋯ The proportion of patients diagnosed with a dust-mite allergy, who undertook preventive measures against perennial allergic rhinitis, was relatively low. Building, maintaining, and continual strengthening the doctors' relationship with chronic allergy patients may shift the nature of healthcare services more towards preventive measures, for the implementation of which the patient will be co-responsible under the coordinated healthcare system.
