Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers of the digestive system and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether miR-26b is involved in the proliferation and resistance to paclitaxel chemotherapy in gastric cancer cells. ⋯ miR-26b inhibits growth and resistance to paclitaxel chemotherapy by silencing the CDC6 gene in the gastric cancer cell line SGC7901.

Prophylactic use of double J (DJ) stents in recipients is highly accepted in renal transplantation. In this study, the association between the frequency of urologic complications (UC) and urinary tract infections (UTI), and the early or late removal of DJ stents was investigated. ⋯ The results of our study demonstrated that DJ stent removal within 14 days did not reduce the risk of UTI when compared to stent removal after 14 days. Similar effects on complication rates for ureteral stenting for these 2 removal periods were observed.

Statins are widely used in stroke patients. The AHA/ASA guidelines recommend aggressive statin therapy in atherosclerotic stroke patients. Their beneficial effects are due to both their hypolipemic and pleiotropic properties. The aim of this study was to establish potential benefits from statin use in ischemic stroke patients with the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). ⋯ Despite the predominant use of statins in atherothrombotic stroke patients, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of statins in cardioembolic stroke patients. Detailed cardiovascular screening for statin therapy should be carried out in all AF patients with regard to primary and secondary stroke prevention.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) concentration in vitreous on postoperative complications after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). ⋯ Preoperative levels of VEGF in vitreous can be a useful biomarker and predictor of the postoperative outcome in terms of intraoperative and postoperative complications.

RS100642, a mexiletine analogue, is a novel sodium channel blocker with neuroprotective and antioxidant activities. The protectivity of RS100642, which has been shown against focal cerebral ischemia, was investigated in global cerebral ischemia in this study. ⋯ Na+ channel blockade by RS100642 has remarkable neuroprotective effects following global brain ischemia/reperfusion damage. Further research is required to determine the optimum dose and time of administration.
