Rapid spread of COVID-19 has caused detrimental effects globally. Involvement of the ACE2 receptor has identified COVID-19 as a multi-organ disease. Preliminary studies have provided evidence that cardiac involvement, including right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH), were found in COVID-19 cases, even in the non-advanced stage. This meta-analysis aims to analyze the prevalence of RVD and PH, and their association with COVID-19 clinical outcome. ⋯ RVD and PH were prevalent in COVID-19 and associated with mortality, severity, ICU admission, and MV usage in COVID-19 patients. Bedside echocardiography examination could be considered as a novel risk stratification tool in COVID-19.

When a child presents with fever in the clinical encounter, parents are usually concerned about alleviating the fever. However, the indications for selecting an appropriate drug from the most commonly used antipyretic drugs, acetaminophen and ibuprofen, remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of acetaminophen and ibuprofen in febrile children through a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ⋯ The effects of ibuprofen are similar to acetaminophen even in children with mean age of approximately 5 years. Nevertheless, acetaminophen is safer than ibuprofen, particularly in children approximately 5 years old.

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most prevalent causes of hearing impairment and occupational diseases. Although multiple factors lead to noise-induced hearing loss, prevention and protection strategies remain limited. Studies in the past decade have employed antioxidants, especially N-acetyl-cysteine, to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluated the effect of N-acetyl-cysteine on the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. ⋯ The present review and meta-analysis recommends that N-acetyl-cysteine may be considered as an option for protective therapy for noise-induced hearing loss. Nonetheless, larger randomized controlled trials are requisite for further investigation and verification.

The effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on C-reactive protein: results from a meta-analysis.
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that causes chronic gastroduodenal infection and affects various systemic diseases. An increase in the blood level of C-reactive protein (CRP; a systemic inflammatory marker), at a low-grade chronic inflammation level, is observed in cases of infection. However, the effect of H. pylori eradication on CRP remains undetermined. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the circulating CRP levels in eradicated patients through a meta-analysis. ⋯ Weak evidence exists regarding the effects of H. pylori eradication on CRP levels. Further research is called for.

The impact of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) on the risk of different types of strokes is unclear. Therefore, we systematically evaluated the impact of LDL-C levels (cohort studies) and lipid-lowering agents (LLAs) (randomized controlled trials) on the different types of stroke. ⋯ Our study sheds light on the debatable association between low LDL-C and different type of strokes. This information can help determine the optimal LDL-C range for stroke prevention, and help plan future LLA studies.
