Congenital heart defects (CHD) are one of the most commonly diagnosed congenital malformations in fetuses and newborns. The aim of the study was to determine whether inter-pregnancy interval (IPI), maternal age or number of pregnancies had any influence on the recurrence of congenital heart disease in subsequent pregnancies. ⋯ The optimal IPI to reduce the risk of recurrence of CHD is 24 months. Shorter intervals are related to a higher risk of recurrence of CHD in the next pregnancy and are independent on the age of the woman and parity.

Biomaterial technology due to its lack of or minimal side effects in tissues has great potential. Traditionally biomaterials used were cobalt-chromium, stainless steel and nitinol alloys. Biomaterials such as magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) have good biocompatibility and consequently can be a potential material for medical implants. To date, the effects of AZ31 alloy stent on cell apoptosis are still unclear. The current investigation was designed to determine the effect of AZ31 alloy stent on necrosis and apoptosis of common bile duct (CBD) epithelial cells. ⋯ To conclude, it can be stated that AZ31 induces apoptosis via alteration in genes including nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), caspase-3, Bax and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and improved the hematological, hepatic and non-hepatic parameters.

Traditional approaches to stress management are difficult to learn and to implicate in daily life. Emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) have become a target of extensive study for recreational and medical purposes. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in stress response, post-stress relaxation, and recovery. This study aimed to assess the effect of modified VR intervention on short-term heart rate variability (HRV) and perceived anxiety levels in healthy volunteers affected by moderate stress. The stressors included mental arithmetic tasks. ⋯ These findings suggest that a medical device with pre-installed Pure Purr software had a significant effect on the recovery of the ANS in healthy volunteers affected by moderate stress.

Warty carcinoma (WC) of the uterine cervix is a rare subtype of squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC), and its frequency, clinical behaviour, and aetiology are obscure. It originates from condylomas, and a viral carcinogenesis seems logical. ⋯ WC is a rare subtype of SCC with good prognosis, regardless of viral status. In contrast to SCC, its aetiology is not related to hr-HPV. The role of EBV remains unclear and cannot currently be denied.

The detection in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) of metabolic alterations suggestive of depression and/or of evolution to dementia. ⋯ In MCI FDG-PET/CT abnormality patterns suggest the presence of depression or the evolution to dementia.
