Renal (ureteric) colic is a common surgical emergency. It is usually caused by calculi obstructing the ureter, but about 15% of patients have other causes, e.g. extrinsic compression, intramural neoplasia or an anatomical abnormality. This review will focus on calculus-related renal or ureteric colic, its assessment and subsequent management.

Otosdcerosis is an autosomal dominant condition affecting the temporal bone. It presents predominantly with deafness in a young population. This review looks at the aetiological theories, present treatment strategies and surgical outcomes of this condition.

The potential therapeutic role of the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor axis, androgen modulators and myostatin inhibition are discussed.
