Should surgical inpatients still wear compression stockings?
Surgical inpatients are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Current national guidelines recommend a combination of pharmacological (chemoprophylaxis) and mechanical thromboprophylaxis to reduce VTE risk. For most patients, mechanical thromboprophylaxis is provided via application of graduated compression stockings (GCS). This editorial reviews the evidence surrounding the efficacy and safety of GCS in VTE prevention, and makes a recommendation regarding their continued use in surgical inpatients.

Academic hospitalists play an integral role in the day-to-day care of hospitalized patients, education and research. They are well-positioned to engage in scholarly and research activities and inform clinical practice. ⋯ Participation in these endeavors not only foster scholarly growth but also enhances career satisfaction for hospitalists. Therefore, there is a need to explore and implement feasible strategies to equip hospitalists with the knowledge and resources necessary to generate scholarship and promote academic growth within the field.

The prevalence of Parkinson's disease has rapidly increased over the last decade. This editorial discusses our current understanding of the pathophysiological basis for the condition, with a particular focus on the potential role of α-synuclein, and the consequent implications this has for both the development of new investigations and disease-modifying therapies. Specifically, the article discusses the development of a new diagnostic test for cerebrospinal fluid α-synuclein, the development of a new staging system for Parkinson's disease, which takes into account the α-synuclein, genetic and neuro-imaging status, and the results of two recently completed clinical trials, using monoclonal antibodies wherein α-synuclein is the principal target. We also discuss the increasing awareness of the importance of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease including hyposmia, rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder, and autonomic and cognitive symptoms.
