Dissections of the cervical brain-supplying arteries are a leading cause of ischemic stroke in young adults, with an annual incidence of 2.5-3 / 100 000 for carotid artery dissection and 1-1.5 / 100 000 for vertebral artery dissection. It can be assumed that many cases go unreported. We present the clinical features here to help physicians diagnose this disease entity as rapidly as possible. ⋯ Dissection of the cervical brain-supplying vessels is not always revealed by the imaging methods that are used to detect it. Stroke prevention thus depends on the physician's being aware of the symptoms and signs of this disease entity, so that early diagnosis can be followed by appropriate treatment.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection During Pregnancy-An Analysis of Clinical Data From Germany and Austria From the CRONOS Registry.
Using data from the German CRONOS registry, we assessed the risk of a complicated course of COVID-19 in women with a SARS-CoV-2-infection during pregnancy, with particular consideration of gestational age, vaccination status, and pandemic dynamics. ⋯ These findings can serve as a basis for counseling about prophylactic or therapeutic measures, such as the administration of monoclonal antibodies. They underscore the efficacy of vaccination for pregnant women even during the omicron phase of the pandemic.

The German Diabetes Risk Score (GDRS) currently enables prediction of the individual risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) within five years. The aim of this study is to extend the prediction period of the GDRS, including its non-clinical version and its HbA1c extension, to 10 years, and to perform external validation. ⋯ The extended GDRS prediction period of 10 years, with a non-clinical version and an HbA1c extension that will soon be available in both German and English, enables the even longer-range, evidence-based identification of high-risk individuals with many different applications, including medical screening.

Studies from Denmark and the USA have shown differences in treatment outcomes for patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) between hospitals of different size and certification status. For Germany, it is not known whether certification as a specialist center for vascular diseases or hospital size is associated with differences in the primary treatment outcome. ⋯ Treatments in certified hospitals are associated with fewer major and more minor amputations. This may reflect intensification of therapy targeting preservation of functional limbs.

For many years, the standard treatment of metastatic, hormone-sensitive prostatic carcinoma (mHSPC) was androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) alone. By lowering the testosterone level into the castration range, ADT deprives the tumor of a key growth factor. ⋯ The treatment of mHSPC is constantly changing. Phase III trials that are now in the recruitment stage, as well as our continually improving understanding of the underlying molecular-pathological mechanisms, will be altering the treatment landscape still further in the years to come.
