Randomized Controlled Trial
Shared Decision Making and the Use of Decision Aids.
In shared decision making (SDM), the patient and the physician reach decisions in partnership. We conducted a trial of SDM training for physicians who treat patients with cancer. ⋯ When physicians treating cancer patients improve their competence in SDM by appropriate training, their patients may suffer less anxiety and depression. These effects merit further study.

The Treatment of School Avoidance in Children and Adolescents With Psychiatric Illness.
5-10% of schoolchildren in Germany are absent from school without an excuse more than five times per year. We investigate the effectiveness of manual-based, multimodal cognitive behavioral therapy focusing on school-avoidant behavior and on the underlying mental disorders. ⋯ In accordance with earlier studies, we found that manual-based multimodal treatment did not improve school avoidance to any greater extent than treatment as usual. Future studies should focus on the conditions for successful reintegration in school and on the differential indicators for outpatient versus inpatient treatment.

Willingness to participate in mammography screening: a randomized controlled questionnaire study of responses to two patient information leaflets with different factual content.
From 2010 onward, a new leaflet about mammography screening for breast cancer, more informative than the preceding version, has been sent to women in Germany aged 50 to 69 with the invitation to undergo screening. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different informational content on the decision whether or not to be screened. ⋯ The greater or lesser informativeness of the leaflet affected neither the participants' knowledge of mammography screening nor their willingness to undergo it. The leaflet was not seen as an aid to decision-making. The best way to assure an informed decision about screening may be for the patient to discuss the matter personally with a qualified professional.

The treatment of displaced intra-articular distal radius fractures in elderly patients.
From 2000 to 2012, the annual incidence of inpatient treatment for distal radius fracture in Germany rose from 65 to 86 per 100 000 persons. It is unclear whether open reduction and volar angle-stable plate osteosynthesis (ORIF), a currently advocated treatment, yields a better functional outcome or quality of life than closed reposition and casting. ⋯ The findings with respect to mobility, functionality, and quality of life at 12 months provide marginal and inconsistent evidence for the superiority of volar angle-stable plate osteosynthesis over closed reduction and casting in the treatment of intra-articular distal radius fractures. Primary nonsurgical management is also effective in suitable patients.

Educating orally anticoagulated patients in drug safety: a cluster-randomized study in general practice.
Orally anticoagulated patients with insufficient knowledge about their treatment have a higher risk of complications. Standardized patient education could raise their level of knowledge and improve time spent within target INR range. ⋯ Patient education was found to be practical, to improve knowledge relating to patient safety in a durable manner, and to meet with the approval of the patients who received it. There was a statistically non-significant trend toward an improvement of the time spent in the INR target range. In view of the major knowledge deficits of orally anticoagulated patients, standardized patient education ought to be made a part of their routine care.
