Background/Aim: Cancer research has been conducted using cultured cells as part of drug discovery testing, but conventional two-dimensional culture methods are unable to reflect the complex tumor microenvironment. On the other hand, three-dimensional cultures have recently been attracting attention as in vitro models that more closely resemble the in vivo physiological environment. The purpose of this study was to establish a 3D culture method for oral cancer and to verify its practicality. ⋯ Cisplatin showed concentration-dependent antitumor effects due to loss of cell adhesion and spheroid disruption in each cell line, while cetuximab exhibited antitumor effects that correlated with EGFR expression in each cell line. Conclusion: Spheroids made from oral cancer cell lines appeared to have tumor-like characteristics that may reflect their clinical significance. In the future, it may become possible to produce tumor spheroids from tissue samples of oral cancer patients, and then apply them to drug screening and to develop individualized diagnostic and treatment methods.

The interaction between enteral nutrients (ENs) and drugs co-administered through a nasogastric (NG) tube reportedly affects the absorption and resultant plasma concentrations of the respective drugs. However, the gastrointestinal absorption of carbamazepine (CBZ), an antiepileptic drug, co-administered with liquid ENs through an NG tube has not been clarified. In this study, we measured the recovery rate (%) of CBZ (Tegretol® powder) passed through an NG tube when co-administered with distilled water or ENs (F2α®, Racol® NF, Ensure Liquid®, and Renalen® LP) of different compositions, frequently used in Japan. ⋯ In conclusion, the co-administration of CBZ with Ensure Liquid® caused a reduction in the absorption of CBZ from the gastrointestinal tract, without adsorption on the NG tube. The administration of Ensure Liquid® 2 h after CBZ is a way to prevent a decrease in plasma CBZ concentration. Our findings suggest that carefully monitoring the plasma levels of CBZ is necessary in co-administation with Ensure liquid® to prevent the unintended effects of the interaction between CBZ and liquid EN.

Backgrounds: The immunonutritional index showed great potential for predicting postoperative complications in various malignant diseases, while risk assessment based on machine learning (ML) methods is becoming popular in clinical practice. Early detection and prevention for postoperative anastomotic leakage (AL) play an important role in prognosis improvement among patients with gastric cancer (GC). Methods: This retrospective study included 297 patients with gastric cancer receiving gastrectomy between 2018 and 2021 in general surgery department of Xinhua Hospital. ⋯ Also, statistical analysis revealed multiple variables with significant relevance to postoperative AL, including serum CRP and albumin on postoperative day 4, NLR and SII etc. Conclusion: This study showed that perioperative immunonutritional index could act as an indicator for postoperative AL. Also, ML methods could significantly enhance the classification ability, and therefore, could be applied as a powerful tool for postoperative risk assessment for patients with GC.

Background: Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are clinically the most frequently encountered neoplasm of the prevascular mediastinum in adults. The role of chest magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been increasingly stressed thanks to its excellent contrast resolution, freedom from ionizing radiation, and capability to provide additional information regarding tumors' cellular structure and vascularity. Methods: This study aimed to establish the relationship between the MR findings and pathological classification of TETs, focusing on diffusion-weighted (DW) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) imaging. ⋯ Although the median TTP of LRTs was lower than that of HRTs or NTs, no statistically significant differences were found between the TTPs of the three groups (p = 0.170). Conclusions: MR is a good imaging modality to preoperatively assess TETs. Morphological features, ADC value, TIC pattern, and TTP are helpful in preoperatively predicting TET pathology.

Basketball is a popular sport worldwide with a high injury risk. In this study, we conducted survey composed of clinical symptom reporting scale, physical examination and meticulous portable musculoskeletal ultrasound to 19 elite male high school basketball players and 15 regular male high school students. ⋯ Screening for asymptomatic lesions bares clinical relevance and plays a role in prevention of symptom development. With the concise and easy-to-perform ultrasonography protocol we performed and being interpreted by sports team physician, the protocol can offer precise diagnosis of common injury and screening for asymptomatic lesion potentially progressive.
