Background: Genetic variations of mu-opioid receptors are well known to contribute to growth and progression of tumors. The most common single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the mu-opioid receptor 1 gene (OPRM1) is the A118G mutation. We examined the association between the recurrent breast cancer and genotypes of OPRM1 A118G SNP (AA vs. ⋯ The incidence of recurrent breast cancer in volatile anaesthesia group was 7.0% and 7.1% in total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) group (RR = 0.984, 95% CI = 0.328 - 2.951; p = 0.978). Conclusion: OPRM1 A118G SNP had no influence on breast cancer recurrence in Korean women. Anaesthesia technique did not show significant effect on the incidence of recurrent breast cancer.

To evaluate the efficacy of trabeculo-canalectomy in treating glaucoma patients, a retrospective investigation of 53 glaucoma patients (53 eyes) who underwent trabeculo-canalectomy was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, China, from April 2017 to January 2019. Intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, surgical success rates, medications, and complications were monitored at post-operative 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. Surgical success criteria were defined as 6 mm Hg≤IOP≤21 mmHg with or without additional medications. ⋯ No blebitis, shallow anterior chamber, choroidal detachment and endophthalmitis were observed. Logistic regression analysis showed that patients with secondary glaucoma were more likely to undergo surgical failure 24 months post-operatively (P= 0.008). Thus, we conclude that trabeculo-canalectomy is effective and safe for the treatment of glaucoma.

Background: Current evidence suggests an increased prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) and anemia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ID and subsequent anemia can be due to iron losses via bleeding resulting in absolute ID or inflammation-driven retention of iron within macrophages resulting in functional ID and anemia of inflammation. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 204 non-exacerbated COPD patients in outpatient care. ⋯ Conclusion: ID is common in COPD patients, but a uniform definition for accurate diagnosis does not exist. Prevalence of functional ID and anemia increased during follow-up. The associations of ID and anemia with reduced functional lung capacity and elevated inflammation may reflect a more severe COPD phenotype.

Background: Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell-derived hepatocyte-like cells (hBMSC-HLCs) are a promising alternative for primary human hepatocytes (HHs) for treating liver disease. However, the molecular characteristics of HLCs remain unclear. Here, we aimed to clarify the transcriptome characteristics of hBMSC-HLCs for future clinical application. ⋯ These 5 genes mainly contributed to liver metabolism and inflammation. Conclusion: hBMSC-HLCs possess a hepatic transcriptome profile and express hepatic-specific genes in vitro and in vivo, which might be useful for future clinical applications. The five upregulated genes identified herein could be potential biomarkers for the characterization of hBMSC-HLCs.

Background: Adenomyosis is a quite common gynecological disorder and above 30% of patients have typical secondary and progressive dysmenorrhea. Current treatments still have many disadvantages and thereby the novel treatment aiming to relieve dysmenorrhea still needs to be further investigated. Mifepristone is a wonderful drug because it is effective, safe and cheap in many diseases including adenomyosis. ⋯ Results: We demonstrated that mifepristone reduced the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α from endometrial epithelial and stromal cells, restricted the infiltration and degranulation of mast cells in eutopic and ectopic endometrium and decreased the density of nerve fibers by inhibiting the migration capacity of nerve cells in adenomyosis. Meanwhile, we found that mifepristone could significantly relieve dysmenorrhea of adenomyosis. Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that mifepristone could be applied in the treatment of dysmenorrhea for the adenomyosis patients.
